Lady, you are dead wrong. Salt air from the ocean can be a very big problem. The problem is not the same everywhere near the ocean. It depends on many factors -- RH, wind, temp, etc. So the fact that ocean air in one place is not a problem does not mean it is never a problem elsewhere.

Salt air, humidity and heat bring about rust Cindyblu - there's no way around that fact.

I will say no more after this. HEAT is not the cause of rust. It's COLD. Humidity, plus temperatures consistently below freezing during the winter, bring RUST. Heat has nothing to do with rust. Regarding humidity. Years ago, I had a place on the Atlantic ocean in Margate, NJ (near Atlantic City). That year, the Washington Redskins had drafted a player from California and I remember him constantly complaining about the humidy on the Jersey beaches. He always remarked, "In California, we go to the ocean to cool off". Really, you don't know humidity until you have lived on the East Coast.

I used to live in White Rock, BC overlooking the ocean for a time, and never saw anything like this until moving to Mazatlan. It's not just the rusting, corrosion and pitting that we battle. Leather goods don't do so well either! Some expats actually leave their leather shoes, belts and purses in the refrigerator when traveling out of Mazatlan for the summer months. Would I make this up? I have gone through many microwaves, fans, light fixtures, faucets, as they really do go ugly and/or quit working in these conditions. My husband constantly battles the rust that attacks his music equipment, like microphone and music stands, speakers, etc. It should have occurred to us that the conditions with his work so close the ocean would also have this effect on his laptop. Some nights at certain times of the year we can actually see the salty mist hanging in the air. This probably should have been a new thread, as this one has effectively derailed, no?

Thanks for the voice of experience Marlene. It was the same in the Sonoran beach towns as well.

That's amazing. I just never would have thought that the humidity could be worse than in White Rock, Vancouver or Seattle. For those of you not from that area its on "The Lower Mainland" on the way to Vancouver just a few Km NW of the US border on 99.

Hey I just figured it out. Have you ever noticed why a cold glass why put out on a warm table, you a see a water ring at the base of the cup? It's general science 101. The colder the air, the less water it can hold. So if the humidity is very high out of doors when its very cold, heat that air up to room temperature, you know 22 C or 72 F and the humidity is going to be lower and have less impact in that heated room.

But the reverse also happens. Imagine having very hot, and very humid air which gets cooler at night. There is precipitation or rain and if the item that is exposed to this hot and humid air is around when the air cools there's going to be water just like there is when the air is cooled around the base of that cold drink you put on the table.

The solution seems to be so simple, yet somehow I missed it
