DVD Region Codes Question

I would like to purchase a DVD and it is Region 1, USA, to give a friend in Mexico.

Do most DVD players purchased and used in Mexico play both USA region 1 and Mexico region 4, or is it likely he won't be able to play this?

Multi-region players as well as 4-only are sold in Mexico, so you need to ask your friend what he can play.

Of course, you could buy a ripper software and burn a region-free copy. It easy to do, but time consuming.
