If you want local channels--ie. networks from NY or LA--you need to be eligible for them. In other words, have a service address in that viewing area. You can keep your billing address anywhere you wish. Yes, you need to "move".

Let me see if I can explain this a bit better. The whole Distant Network concept was to provide the 4 major networks to those viewers who are not able to receive a signal from the closest station(s)to them. The stations could not then claim them in their DMA(service area). As a result, the 4 networks were then able to sell them the signal from another city that was a network owned and operated channel. They picked at least one from each time zone. NY, Denver, Chicago, LA and 2 others. You, the consumer, were then able to pick from these stations to provide the network programming you wanted. Unfortunately, Dish was found to be in violation of the rules used for qualifying customers for these distant networks. As a result, Dish no longer can sell the networks to those that don't have available locals. PBS wasn't party to the lawsuit, so the national PBS can still be provided.
Now, as to your question, you are NOT getting the networks because of the Distant network deal. You are getting the local networks you are eligible for with your Manhattan address. They just happen to also have been the stations that were available until this month for others to purchase thru the Distants program. No different than if you lived in Peoria and got those locals. If your service address changed to an area that was unserved by any locals, then, yes, you would be eligible for the national PBS channel, but then you would not be eligible for any NBC, CBS, ABC, or FOX stations since Dish is longer able to provide them to you. Dish is trying an end run around this limitation by referring you to the company Brian mentioned above. If you are trying to subscribe via this new program, I would wait awhile. The picture quality is said to be horrible, and they are screwing up the paper work.

My problem, like I think many others, is that we are located in Mexico. We are billed at our MBE address in Texas. We tried Dish using out Texas address and they approved us for a SPOT FEED to Odessa Texas which does not help at all. We do not think that Dish would have a Spot Feed for the GDL area. Is there some way we can get networks here. We do not mind paying for them. With our antennas we now get Sat. 119 and 110.

Jerry: you are correct, DISH network does not have a spot beam for Guadalajara, Mexico. DISH provides coverage to many hundred cities in the US most on spot beams not viewable here, and some on Conus beams that are viewable here in Ajijic-Chapala.

As was explained above by Tim, there are several ways to get network feeds. One way is to have an address of record in a city that has a conus beam and an appropriately sized dish pointed at the satellite that carries the conus beam. Another way is to have an address of record in an area that does not receive network feeds, you know out in Tim-buck-to. Then you are allowed to subscribe to the network feeds, but not through DISH rather using the services of www.callnps.com,.

My suggestion is, that you talk to your trusted satellite dealer and see what he suggests. You could then share what he said to you here on line, and let us suggest a better way should the charge be too great, or the method be too complicated.

Is it correct that the only areas from which we can get service if we have a local address in those areas are LA and NY? That is what my dealer told me, but my neighbor, I think, is still getting his service from Denver using his Colorado address.

I'd prefer San Diego, but the dealer says I can only get LA.

I bet that you miss-understood what the dealer said. There are many many cities transmitted via Conus beam that can be received in Mexico. The trouble is that down here many folks are sold DISH systems that only point at one point in the sky. You are then told that you have a DISH package. I guess one could call it that, but even the DISH 500 package sold in the US points at two locations 110W and 119W and the newer DISH1000 package points at, at least 3 positions in the sky.

Yes if your single dish is pointed at 119 W you can get either NY or LA. And no, regardless of where you point that dish you are not going to get the spot beam providing programs to San Diego. How did I get this information? By using the link provided in an earlier post and spending 10 minutes looking, something anyone of you can do as well.

Here is the link again http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/america.html Find the DISH satellite you are curious about and then left click on SID found to the right of the satellite dish in question.

Once you find a conus beam carrying the network stations you want on one of the satellites, then your next task will be to find out how strong the signal of that satellite is in this part of the world. Of the many satellites*** DISH uses, I only know about the signal strengths of 4 or 5 of them

*** I found 11 satellites. They are: EchoStar 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, AMC 15 & 16 and Rainbow 1

One of the advantages of being the moderator is that I can see your IP #. You appear to be connecting here in Mexico using Prodigy. If this is true, and I were you, I would talk to a satellite dealer down here. Be careful though, some charge much more money than the others for the same service.

Yes, today with a New York address, you should be able to get your New York stations because they are presently being transmitted not on spot beams only viewable around NY, but on Conus or wide beams that bleed into Mexico. The trouble is that some of the experts are suggesting that the NY beams will or may be converted from conus to spot beams and that when or if this happens, of course, you will no longer be able to watch these NY stations here in Mexico.

That same dealer should be able to advise you about the availability of Star Choice. But remember, though, that some dealers charge much more than others for the same service. So unless you have way too much money, check out the competition.

Since you will already have your equipment for Dish and won't have to pay the exhorbitant local cost for such service, you might as well bring it down and use it until or unless they cut off our NY service.

Technically, you can't get the NY network service. You get the New York local channels - which is the same thing only with more channnels than we used to get with the network package.

You have to use a broker to get Canadian service if you don't have a Canadian address. We use Cathy at TVM and have had good service, she comes highly recommended. She sets up your account but the bill from StarChoice goes on your credit card. She works closely with the place we got the equipment, http://www.global-cm.net/. It was very simple, we bought the equipment, set up our account through Cathy and picked the packages we wanted. Mike at Global has the coordinates for most of MX and Central America on the web site. No web site for Cathy, it's all done by phone or email. tvm@tvmdeicom.ca

I took Jonna's advice a few months ago and used Cathy and Mike for equipment. I now use Star Choice in Pa. and just brought the receiver and LNBF (?) with me to Mexico. Since I didn't have the space to bring down a dish I will buy one in Quintana Roo in a few days and enjoy the Canadian TV along with the US networks while in Mexico.
I had Dish for over 9 years in the US and cancelled it when I kept hearing about all the changes they were making.
I really enjoy Star Choice.

I believe at this time that the only option is Atlanta and San Fran. I am not sure if it is one or the other, or that you will receive both. NY is still on ConUS transponder, so you may still get NY until Dish decides to go to spot beam. The services are now totally independent of each other, so theoretically, you could have different service addresses for each provider. I have heard that many are doing just that. As with Dish, you may also have a different billing address from your service address.
