The recent problems of Illinois' governor, in which he has been implicated in wrongdoing via court-ordered wiretaps, brings to mind a recent law passed by the Mexican congress. In essence, the legislation requires that telephone companies automatically record, and preserve for one year, the content of all calls and text messages made to and from cellular phones whether prepaid or contract. The intent is to combat extortions and kidnappings. It is unfortunate that such extreme measures must be taken and that the protections guaranteed to Americans can not be likewise provided in Mexico. It is an act of desperation and Mexicans who are already distrustful of their government officials now have one more thing to worry about. Clearly, the political party in power will have an enormous advantage over its rivals and the temptation to use the information for purposes other than that which is intended will be irresistible.

P.S. The cartels won't be the least bit fazed by all this. They will just start using Skype....
