Cell phones in Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
Buenas Dias a todos,

My husband and are traveling soon to Mexico. We'll be camping our way down the west coast and inland and possibly up the east back to the US.
I can get a cell phone plan for our trip--- Is it worth it and do they work down there? To be used for emergencies.
Gracias,

Paulette

I suggest that you get a Mexican cell phone while you are traveing, you are likely to have better coverage than on your US roaming in Mexico, and it will cost less. If you have an old US cell phone, bring it with you. More info below.

It would be worth it depending on how long you are going to be there. The trip you are planning sounds like it would take a few months at least. If you are a Cingular or a Tmobile customer, they have plans that will allow you to use your phone anywhere in Mexico that has GSM coverage. Then when you get home, switch back to the normal plans for US coverage. I have a cell phone through Cingular and I have their North America 450/1000 plan which includes 450 daytime/weekday minutes and 1000 night/weekend minutes. I can be anywhere in the US or Mexico and call anywhere in the US or Mexico and not get charged extra for long distance or roaming. The plan is $60 a month and with taxes and stuff my bill usually runs about $75 a month. It is worth it for us because we have family in both countries and we can talk to them all the time without having to go buy the extremely expensive phone cards. Just make sure the phone you are using is a Tri-mode phone with 850/1900 mhz signal. The rep at the cell phone company will know what you need. And you could even get a local phone number to your home town, so friends and family don't have to dial long distance to talk to you.

What happens down in Mexico...Stays in Mexico.

Thanks! I have signed up with cingular. Is the coverage pretty good? We plan on spending lots of time in beach towns.
