Cable, Satilite... ??

Can't Post | Private Reply
What will be our alternatives for premium television in Aguascalientes, with access to US television and news? We have read (don't recall where now) that pirated satilite is the only way to get US channels. Is that correct?

Any info is useful and appreciated.

No .. I've been watching the football playoffs on SKY which is a legit Mexican company. I only have the medium package and get 6-8 English channels - could pay for more

I watch my Seattle stations on Star Choice (www.starchoice.com) Star Choice, one of the two Canadian small dish systems offers US networks from Seattle, Spokane, Detroit and Buffalo. If you want you can even get some 18 or so HD channels to include the US networks in high definition

Ok, I appreciate the input. I guess with most of the *social and comfort* information we are looking for, it's generally hit or miss, and usually a more straightforward answer from a first party.

Thanks! Hubby will be so happy!

My answer was very short. It would take at least one page of typing to briefly explain some of the more popular options, you know: C band, Star Choice, the limitations of DISH Network Etc. My point being, that there are all kinds of solutions depending upon the programming you desire. The one thing you do not have to go without is programming from the US, Canada, Europe, what have you.

I keep getting emails about television service through my computer - thousands of stations worldwide. I'd like to check that out, but they want $67 before letting me get any information.

Has anyone information about this "service?" Is it worthwhile and does it get major US stations?

I called StarChoice and they said we need a Canadian address in order to establish service. We live in Houston, Texas at the moment and are moving to Aguascalientes in about a month. Any suggestions?

According to the local Star Choice expert in Ajijic, more than half of the Star Choice users in the greater Ajijic-Chapala area are US citizens, who do not have legitimate Canadian addresses, it it's not a problem if handled correctly (I am lucky enough to have a SMALL part interest in a summer cottage in BC). What a broker south of the border can do for you, not Star Choice, will be to be to open up a virtual, or pretend address, for you and set you up with a star choice system. Maybe a reader can recommend a dealer for you in Aguascalientes.

Sadly I would not know who to check out.

Also remember that this same dealer could probably do the same for you for a US DISH Network system. Just understand that you may not be able to get your local network stations on DISH Network though, because most local cities are on spot beams which can not be watched in central Mexico. All of Star Choices signals can be watched in Mexico. One Star Choice distributer in the US is http://www.global-cm.net/

I bought my StarChoice equipment from Mike at the address Pete gave you. He is not the broker but he will give you Cathy at TVM's email address and she is the broker that we use. She sets up your account with StarChoice, it gets billed to your Visa and she gets an annual surcharge. I am very pleased with both Cathy and Mike for service and equipment. If you read a lot of the sat forums (like I did before buying) you will find that not all brokers are so well thought of as Cathy, she gets rave reviews all the time. Others are accused of no service and no response on billing questions, they generally bill you themselves instead of setting up an account for you with StarChoice. I recommend using Cathy. You will need to talk to Mike first, get your equipment and pick your service plan and then email Cathy with the details.

I want to add that I also recommend setting it all up while you are in the US and bringing it down with you. Mike will ship everything to you in the states but not in Mexico.

Hi Tina,

Once again, a good resource for this question is probably the ESLBG (English-speaking Ladies Breakfast Group).

We have SKY satellite service as we are beyond the area to which cable TV extends, but if you settle in the northern part of the city, you will have more options.
