Big ole dish...

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi all. My ignorance runneth over, so please help me out here. The owner of my condo has this big dish on the roof. We pick up DISH TV on it. I bought a used receiver, which had a balance owed to DISH by the previous owner but that is another story, and had dish activate it. At the same time I increased the number of channels we were getting here and added the west coast satellite national channels (ABC, NBC, Etc. - sure would like to get the football this fall). I got the original 120 channels but not any of the new ones. Called DISH back and they helped me realize that I was only getting one satellite feed - 119 I think. The missing channels are on satellite 110. I am also missing the national channels on 119 transponder 3. Called the local folks here and they stated we needed more equipement and a splitter installed on the dish. He also stated that he still could not guarantee that we would get all the channels even with the new equipment. Is this correct? Can the problem be solved by alignment? Do we need more equipment? Can it be solved at all? Help!!

Thanks.

You need a high guality 1.4 meter or larger dish to pick up those channels carried by DISH on the two satellites Echostar 6 and 8 that are located at 110 degrees West. (I think that's the one you're pointed at) There are other DISH satellites carrying many more programs located at different spots in the sky. Echostar 7 is located at 119 degrees West for example. I'm told you need a 1.8 meter or larger dish for that satellite.

You asked about transponder 3 on 119 W. Stations carried on that Transponder are spot beamed to spot locations usually about 800 miles in diameter in the US. The chances of you getting them are very, very small.

Sadly, often the folks lakeside tell you that if you point your Sat dish at 110 degrees W. that you are getting DISH when actually you are only getting some of the programming DISH offers. In the states, most setups include equipment that allows you to point at two spots in the horizon, at those satellites located at both 110 and 119 degrees West. Often when you want your local stations one has to point at a third point or satellite.

Yep, you need a switch I think called an SW21. It sells for about $20 or $30 stateside. You also need a second satellite dish and LNB pointed at the second satellite. (I doubt that you will find a split or dual LNB that you could point at that one dish)

To learn about programming go to

http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/america.html

Dont click on the "Echostar" or" Dish" link, rather click on the words to the right thereof on "Freq". or" VC".

You will notice there are some 7 different Dish satellites you could point at. Most programming is on 110 and 119 West.

If you were talking to the folks at Sat Systems at 766-1117, they know what they are talking about

Hi Rocky,

I get the national broadcast channels out of NYC on 119. Perhaps you should switch from West coast to East coast feeds.

You don't need satellite to get NFL football at Lake Chapala. All the Sunday, Thursday, and Monday night games are broadcast live on cable. Some come via ESPN1 and ESPN2, some via Fox Sports. The commentary is in Spanish and will teach you a lot. For example, the quarterback is the mariscal de campo--the field marshall.

Thanks for the responses. All there were very helpful. Yes Pete, Satellite Systems - Mario. Thought I could trust them but it is always good to hear it from someone else. Don't know the size of the dish and I don't think I will go climbing to measure it! :-) But it does look quite large from the ground. 110 & 119 are the ones we need - get 119 fine right now.

Good idea Rolly, I never would have thought of that. Thanks.

We also have cable and I do, at times, watch some of the shows & sports in Spanish. Now if I could just put the vocal in slow motion... I hear many words that I know in Spanish but by the time I recognize that I know the word they have gone to commercial!!! But you are right Esperanza. It is a good tool for learning Spanish.

Thanks again.
