Are there any dial up ISPs in Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
I would like to help a friend set up low cost internet access, and I am guessing that dial up will be half the cost of cable. Perhaps 250 pesos per month instead of 450 pesos. My cable internet connection is provided at no cost with my apartment rental so I do not know what actual costs are.

Location is Morelia.

Anyone know of possible ISPs and approximate costs?

Whistler, in Morelia there's dial-up service available through Prodigy (Telmex). Otherwise, the choices are ADSL from Prodigy or cable from Telecable. Your friend might be interested to know that the cost for Prodigy ADSL (runs at 1mg) is 349 pesos/month plus tax, over and above the regular telephone bill.

Your friend MIGHT still be able to get Internet from Todito; that's a pre-paid card for dial-up. It used to be available in Morelia and might still be; users generally say it's faster to use smoke signals, but hey...

Already checked Rollys site - the link to Prodigy does not work. Also checked the Telmex site - also no information. Very strange.

The Prodigy ADSL cost is reasonable, although still out of range for most Morelianos...

Yes, it takes you to prodigy. There is no dial up service offered.

DOES ANYONE KNOWO OF A DIAL UP SERVICE OFFERED IN MORELIA. OR, A CABLE INTERNET SERVICE THAT COSTS LESS THAN THE $399 PESOS PER MONTH (WITH IVA) OFFERED BY TELMEX?

Whistler - you may not have found mention of dial up service, but Telmex has dial up service - it is the fall back on Infinitum, should it go down - you dial up. We have not had that service for a long time but the basic phone line is around 180 pesos a month, including 100 local calls per month - dial up service was an additional amount and I cannot remember the cost - an amount equivalent to about $35 US is what is in the back of my mind. Remember that each time you dial up you use one call and each time you get dropped and dial up again, you've used another call - so it would be a rare user who can manage on 100 calls a month, including actual phone calls.

Whistler, typing in all capital letters in a post is the equivalent of shouting. I'm sorry you're frustrated, but kindly don't take it out on me.

Wait till Monday and call Prodigy. The number is 01-800-123-0000. You'll need to be able to speak Spanish.

I heard (dangerous statement) some time ago that Telmex planned to phase out its dial-up service. Could it be that is has happened, or at least they are taking no new accounts?

Whistler, please, report back what you find after talking to Telmex.

In Lerdo, broadband from the cable company costs about half what Telmex charges for their basic DSL.

And thanks for alerting me to the dead link on my webpage.

Esperanza, your input is excellent, thank you! I apologize for my lack of etiquette.. I think Rolly is right, seems like it has been phased out. My guess is the best deal in town is the 399 pesos ADSL service from Telmex, but I 'll poke around some more. I was hoping to find something like the $9.99 per month dial up programs that are available in the USA, but with an access number here in Morelia...

Hey, I just reviewed the Todito sight esperanza recommended and there is a card, a Christmas special, for 899 pesos with unlimited dial up use for 1 year! WOW! (I am shouting again!). Now let me see if there is a Morelia number... anyone tried this service?

Whistler - you have reminded me that we used to pay for our dial up service with Telmex by the year and it was pretty reasonable that way - I have to say that the Todito deal sounds better.

Their web site is fresh and professional, unlike Telmex´s with non functioning links. But to buy the card one needs a Mexican based credit card as the web site requires you to enter the state and city where the card is issued, visa mastercard, or amex. Will have to find a Mexican friend with a Mexican credit card...

I used Todito dial-up for more than two years. I always bought the cards at Oxxo. They were always good to help if I had a problem. As far as the quality--well, it was dial-up, what can I say. It worked--not fast, but it did work.
