Anti-Virus Independent Test Results for Home Users

AV-TEST Institute is an independent testing service based in Germany. Each year they test the leading AV products for their protection value and effectiveness. They have just completed and released their December 2012. Click on the link to see the results.

I presently use the Microsoft product (In conjuction with another product) that did very poorly. I may be switching to a more effective product soon. Note - Microsoft has challenged the testing methods and results.

I bit of a warning. When it's time for me to get a new Anti-virus I often go to the latest ratings and get a highly rated program. Gosh 8 months later, often other programs are updated and when they do another rating, the one I got that was rated quite quite high is often now much farther down the list as the competition has come up with newer updates.

Good luck

I did much as you have until a few years ago. I had switched to McAfee and got a truly terrible virus infection. Then I switched to the Norton full Internet protection package (Norton 360), set it for automatic updating and have had ABSOLUTELY NO problems since. It's a bit expensive (for me at least), but it works, regardless of where it stands in the rankings at any given time. I even use it for defragmenting my hard disc, as it makes the computer a bit faster than does the Microsoft defragmentation program, although my DAILY backups (using the Acronis "bare metal" backup program) don't run as fast as when I use the Microsoft defrag program. But that just means around 7 minutes vs 4 or 5 minutes for the daily incremental backup, and I can live with that.

That bare metal backup program also allows me to install the download to ANY computer (with enough hard disc space, naturally), and bingo, I have a fully operating computer that is a perfect clone of my regular computer. That's very helpful when my regular computer is down for some reason, as I can just download the backup to a loaner computer and have it operate exactly like my regular computer, then after the regular computer is ready, down load the latest backup from the loaner, and I'm back in business. Of course you must have an external hard disc of adequate size to do this, but that's a very small investment compared with trying to recover data from a blown-up hard disc. I had to do that once and it cost nearly $2000 USD. That's when I bought the external hard disc and the Acronis program.
