Does anyone know why navel oranges are not commonly (if at all) available in México? It would seem that, considering the aabundandce of citrus fruits in México and the popularity of oranges for eating, not just for juice, that navel oranges would be quite popular.

Hi Mazbook1,

I agree with you a great orange. I have not seen them here in the Querétaro area either. I have had some oranges from the Rio Verde Area of San Luis Potosi area, and I never was able to get a straight answer about name for them. For all I know, they very well could be a variant of the Navel Oranges.

Two groups of navel oranges ~
  • Lane Late Navel oranges, available from February – primarily for eating, not good for juice
  • Navelina oranges, another variety of navel orange, used for juice, but also eaten, harvested from December
are definitely grown (and sold) in Mexico, though I have no idea when/where these would be available in Mazatlán.

We see navel oranges for sale at our weekly neighborhood tianguis as well as at various markets. They are generally dyed quite red.

Be careful, some grapefruit are also dyed the same color. Don't ask me how I know this, but it involved throwing away an entire cake AND buying a new blender jar.
