Tamale Festival

The day before yesterday, while our recliners were perched in relaxation mode while watching the tube, my wife handed me a folded newspaper advertisement and with her inviting, somewhat knowing I'd be happy smile, said, "this is for you."

Ahhhh, with an echo of surprise, once again, my so welcomed Tamale Festival today will be dancing the dance of la masa, con chile, carne de Puerco, Pollo, y tu dime tu preferencia para darle tu savor favorito! Oh yes, I do look forward to this day! Last year my Conchita introduced me to some scrumptious tamales, I later picked up at her home, she made for me for Christmas.

Will Conchita be at the Tamale Festival this year, no doubt, but then again, will fickle taste buds find another Conchita with yet another lip smacking favorite to dance to.

Tamale lovers aren't hard to come by, especially amongst you guys, so, if it were you milling around the fierce competition of another festive Tamale Festival, what kind and/or flavor would you be looking for? I'll try real hard ... and force myself to taste them for you .. Smile

After we got to the Festival, about 5:30 pm and finally found a place to park, the main street leading toward the Tamale Festival was alive with people milling around with plastic bags loaded down with steaming tamales. There was a bit of a brisk chill in the air, about 67-68 digress but still very nice.

On the way, we were going to pass Conchita’s house (which is right around the corner from the Festival) two men, one carrying a large hoya for carrying tamales was approaching her house, and I asked him if he was getting those tamales for Conchita? This kind of caught him off guard and with a quick solicitous smile replied, “Oh si, she’s at the third stand from the corner.” Then him and the other older gentleman scurried off as if customers hunger and profits were eagerly waiting for them to return.

Apparently, this year, the tide of popularity brought-in a title wave of hungry souls clamoring in huge lines waiting to bite into those inviting and steamy hot tamales. Like last year, we’d both approach and clarified we wanted 2 dozen tamales to go but would first like to taste one to see if this is what we should buy. In lieu of our request, this was done eagerly and after about 4 or 5 samplings, we went into a very busy Mexican restaurant, which always seemed packed with patrons.

Surprisingly, the menu was not only reasonable and varied, but the portions on other patrons plates were sizable, so we ordered Chile Rellenos, which came with rice, beans and chips and I ordered an additional tamale …… purely as a sampler… Laugh Bingo, we scored, my wife exclaimed, Boy, these are the best Chile Relleons, I’ve ever tasted and all I could do between bites is nod my head in agreement. After we finished our cerveza, we looked at each other, smiled and said, “Another great find!”

We knew which stand Conchita was at from the get-go, but were saving her for the last. After dinner, we approached her stand and the lines were relentless. Poor Conchita was so disheveled and kind of out of sorts with the demands of hungry lines, she bid us hello, she gave us a tamale to sample and YES, YES, Conchita’s tamale’s won out again for second year in a row.

We bought two dozen, she smiled and gave us her card again and said, “si quieres más por Navidad, me llaman y Feliz Navidad.” We left content, with a bit of Conchita now in our freezer waiting for Christmas.
