Salsa de Zarzamoras

The hedgerows around mi ranchito are dripping with blackberries.

I've been making the usual favorite jellies and baked goods but just tried out a recipe for blackberry salsa.

May have just hooked myself on this salsa with vanilla icecream:)

Blackberry Salsa

2 chipotle peppers, dried
6 serrano peppers, finely diced
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground oregano
1/2 cup water
12 ounces blackberries, fresh or frozen
3 tablespoons chocolate syrup
2 cup chopped pecans, toasted

Place chipotles in a saucepan, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cover, and boil until tender about 15 minutes; drain. Set aside to cool. Finely dice the rehydrated chipotles and combine with serranos, sugars, salt, cinnamon, oregano and water in a medium saucepan. Bring mixture to a low boil. Cook until thickened slightly about 7 or 8 minutes, stirring frequently. Add blackberries and cook until they start to break up but not disintegrate. You want the salsa to have a chunky texture. Remove mixture from heat, and stir in chocolate syrup and pecans. Chill thoroughly, and serve over ice cream.

That is some combination of flavors! I'm having a hard time imagining the taste. I may have to come up there and try some of yours <g>

There are blackberries everywhere here too and I've been making the usual pies, buckles and cobblers. You've made me start thinking about using them in a savory sauce instead of sweet. Yours is sweet but what about a chutney kind of salsa? Do you have any recipes for something like that?

I haven't tried it because blueberries are too expensive here- around $4 for a small container.

Yes Jonna, it is quite a combination!
I've never tasted anything quite like it before.
Chipolites with their distinctive taste usually find their way into savory dishes with adobo sauces and/or roasted chicken.

>You've made me start thinking about using them in a savory sauce instead of sweet.

Our town, Powell River, B.C. has a week-long annual 'Blackberry Festival' every August.

The fiesta starts this coming weekend with all kinds of imaginative blackberry treats at the Farmers' Market (where I sell fruits, vegetables, eggs etc.)

The fiesta ends with a huge street party where HWY 101 is closed for six blocks for the evening next Friday. (The traffic is diverted away from the highway's beach route onto alternate roads through town.

Vendors are encouraged to feature blackberries in creative concoctions at their booths. So that's why I'm busy 'experimenting' .

>Yours is sweet but what about a chutney kind of salsa? Do you have any recipes for something like that?

Yes, amiga. Here is the chutney salsa recipe that I am trying out later today.

1 tomato fresh and diced
1/2 carrot, finely grated
1/4 c red onion finely grated
2 tbsp cilantro fresh and chopped
salt , Tabasco to taste
1 tsp mint fresh
1/4c red pepper chopped
1 lime, juiced
1 tbsp oil
1/2 c blackberries

Combine all chopped vegies and sauce
Add oil and lime juice, mix well
Add blackberries last and chill mixture

Preheat oven to 350F

Place 2 Brie cheese 4" rounds in cermanic oven-safe dish
Bake cheeses for 15 minutes until cheese is soft.

Serve with blackberry salsa with crackers, or baguettes and Sauvigon blanc.

Got everything on hand except that particular wine. Will just have to substitute:)

mmmmmmm.... I've saved all three recipes and will try them when I can get the ingredients. Where we are out at the tip of the Olympic peninsula, there aren't a lot of places to get things like Brie. I'm looking at Vancouver Island though, across the Strait, and we may take the ferry out there at the end of this week. Maybe we can make it to the Blackberry festival. It sounds like a delicious time.
