I mean like "up north" pickles - sweet or sour - not canned Jalapeños

Under the Star label are bottled kosher dill spears from Villa de Alvarez, Colima. I bought them at Trico, a gourmet chain. I've seen other brand available elsewhere, but cucumber pickles are not exactly a hugely popular item here.

That's what I have found in DF stores.

1. There are sometimes some imported picled or marinated cucumbers in the gourmet sections of the large supermarkets. The best picled ones I got in the Commercial Mexicana; sorry; don't remember the brand. The best and pretty cheap marinated cucumbers are sold at Carrefour, they always have several brands in the International food department. My favorites are their own Carrefour brand, imported from France. Unfortunately, they seem to grow in price every month.

2. You could check in the gourmet stores - the food departments of the Liverpool, Palacio de Hierro, Fabricas de Francia. Also, in DF, there are several chains of gourmet imports stores, like La Naval, La Europea and a whole lot more.

3. Costco and Sam's Club sell imported preserves

4. Large supermarkets, like Mega Commercial Mexicana and Wal Mart make their own pickles, sold in the prepared foods sections. But they are pretty bad, being sort of meelee.

5. Arab food stores. In DF there are two noticeable chains, Adonis and Biblos. They sell a variety of different brands and kinds of pickles (on my last visit to Biblos in Polanco there were five varieties). Right now in my fridge I have a jar of pickled cucumbers produced in Lebanon, the brand is named Al-Rabih. Unfortunately, they are a bit different from what you probably expect - very salty, a bit too sour and with more than a hint of anis. Some pickle-missing people like them a lot, but I cannot eat them straight, however they work fine for recepies requiring pickles. Oh, of all the Arab food stores the biggest variety is found in the store in front of the Libanese Cultural Center's restaurant, at the avenida Barranca del Muerto.

6. There is a Russian catering service in DF called Boris (phone # 5049 7850), they only do home delivery, and only on weekends. They make perfect, excellent sour pickles, at 40 pesos a kilo.
