Moldy Dishes

So, I dunno if this belongs in the Mexican Kitchen section, but since the moldy dishes are in my kitchen in Mexico, here is the question:

I have some dishes I purchased in Capula, Michoacan. They are not a high heat glaze kind of dish, but the terra cotta earthy looking kind of low heat fired dishes popular in a lot of restaurants. They are growing some awesome looking mold in my cabinet.

Any suggestions? I am presently soaking them in a solution of Clorox to kill the mold, but I don't know whether or not it will return.

Oh yeah, I've had that happen, too. Put them in the dishwasher. But sometimes some of them will break in the dishwasher. After a while, they don't seem to get as moldy as they do when they're new.

Thanks, Jennifer. I suspect this is a more tenacious mold. I always put the dishes in the dishwasher and that doesn't seem to do it. I'm trying the Clorox cure today and then I'll put them in the dishwasher after that.

If I start to sprout yellow and green fuzzies on my face, I'll pitch the dishes.

We have the same problem. We have two solutions.

First, my wife leaves them out in the sun to dry. This seems to work.

Second, we just sold our house, included the moldy dishes in the furnishings and bought a beautiful set of pottery dishes from Barbara's Bazaar for our new house. We are confident that this will solve the problem for us.

It occurs to me that the only dishes that get moldy are the ones that are stacked one on top of the other. I wonder if they were stored vertically, separate from one another in a rack if they would mold?

We've tried the sun solution, too But if the dishes aren't used for awhile, we get the mold bloom again.
