Mexican Potatoes

I am not really a fan of the Mexican "White" Potatoes, until last night. They make a very poor bowl of mashed potatoes and they certainly don’t bake well at all, but last night I made some meatloaf and decided to roast both Mexican White Potatoes and some carrots as well for a side dish. I must say the roasted Mexican Whites with a dusting of Paprika and the roasted carrots with a dusting of cinnamon made a very tasty side dish. Actually they were the hit of the meal . . . . . . so much for my meatloaf! (smiling) Every three or four months or so when I make my trips NOB, I always come back with at least 40 pounds of Russet Potatoes, as well as some fresh sweet potatoes. Yes, I know there is a substitute for the sweet potatoes and they aren’t bad, but they are not sweet potatoes and there is no substitute for Russet Potatoes for baking, scalloped or mashed at my table. I will see how well these roasted Mexican White Potatoes fry up with NOB sausage and eggs later this morning. Mwanwhile, my Mexican family really have become fans of the Russet potatoes as well asd now it is a standing order on my shoping list when I am NOB, the bad part is we are always running out! I wonder why when they are so popular with all our Mexican house guests, the Russets are not grown down here.

Just this week I was researching the question of Idaho russet potato imports into Mexico. Currently, potatoes from the USA may only be imported up to 26 miles into this country. http://ageconsearch.umn.edu/.../56661/2/jaae156.pdf

That may be about to change: http://www.thenews.com.mx/...ng-us-potato-tariffs

We get russets down here once in a while it is hit and miss so someone is bringing them in over the 26 miles limit.

Sonora is growing some russets which occasionally make it to Super Lake in the Chapala area.

Funny thing Vichil,

I also get them here in Querétaro every once in a while also! For some reason it always seems to coincide with my return trips from NOB! You can always find them under the very large bags of Purina Dog Chow; I always list them as Russets on my declaration and they always pass. I pay my dues and off I go! It would be a lot simpler though, if I could just go here to the Mercado and buy them! . . . . . . same with the sweet potatoes! (smiling)

Esperanza,
Thank you for that information; it makes for interesting reading. Let's hope it really does change, and is not just that . . . . simply interesting reading. That would be refreshing for sure. When do you suspect we should know if this turns out to be correct? Any idea?
