Mamey as Substitute for Pumpkin

Anyone ever made any mamey pies? We did once, in San Cristóbal de Las Casas. They were so sweet and luscious, we didn't have to precook them. The flesh of this fruit tastes like a blend of sweet potato, pumpkin, honey and spices.

We peeled them, mashed them, mixed with egg and evaporated milk, and a pinch of salt; put it into an unbaked home made pie shell, and slipped it into the oven.
I need to make 4 "pumpkin" pies this Wednesday, and I haven't found any pumpkin yet. I could do them out of sweet potatoes, perhaps with some cooked carrots mashed in; or I could do all mamey pies.
All generalities are suspect, including this one.

I vote for the mamey.

Then you can get down on one knee like Al Jolson and sing..."Mamey..."

I think you answered your own question, Anonimo! Mamey (I have never tried it or seen it) sounds like the answer. The snowbirds here in Maz bring their canned pumpkin. I have always thought that I could put some of the candied (?) camotes, which they sell in the market here, into the processor and add the eggs, milk and spices to make a good pie. But I probably won't try it as long as long as someone keeps bringing down the Libby's. Dee

Thanks, Esperanza; I already did that awful pun when I posted this question on the Lonely Planet Thorntree's Get Stuffed Branch. But it's good to see that great punsters think alike.

For a more detailed story on the making of the pies, see http://mexkitchen.blogspot.com/

This pies, both mamey and pumpkin, came out pretty good. The mamey filling was denser; sort of like a heavy, richer sweet potato pie, yet full of elusive flavors. The meal was very nice, too. I didn't try the pumpkin as I was stuffed.

That was a great report Anonimo! I had the whole turkey dinner thing with snowbird friends who drove down with all the requisite stuff: the frozen turkey, Idaho potatoes (they are from Idaho and those beautiful bakers were mashed of course), sage dressing, cranberry sauce and of course pumpkin pie made from Libby´s! And you put in all that work and didn´t have room to try the pumpkin pie! I am glad the mamey pie turned out good. I will look for it here. Sounds interesting. Happy Thanksgiving to you. And thank you for the cooking info you share with us year around.
