Lunch on a cold day in Morelia

Can't Post |
Today's cold is the kind that seemed to presage the first snowfall. I wanted something warm and which would stick to my ribs, something that could be made with what's on hand. So split pea soup it was. Into the pressure cooker went a package of dried peas, garlic, a couple of ribs of celery, two carrots, and a third of an onion. When that had finished cooking, it was spun in the blender. Now it was time for seasoning. And only then did I remember that I didn't have any green chiles. And I didn't want to mar the color by adding red. So I rummaged around the spice cabinet to find something to perk up the soup. I could've gone outside and plucked some horseradish, but it was just too cold. So wasabi powder it was. Heaply spoonsful kept the soup just the right color. As I polished off a bowl of my newly invented soup, it dawned on me that I'd made nothing more than a soup version of wasabi peas. And that was all right, too.
