Jamaica

Jamaica is the most popular non-carb drink where I live, but usually it is too sweet for my taste. The other day I had some that was so wonderful! My friend's housekeeper makes it for her. Apparently she puts in a bit of salt and lime juice and goes light on the sugar. So refreshing! My friend hasn't been able to replicate it, but maybe you can. I am going to give it a try.

My wife makes Agua de Jamaica, and drinks it unsweetened. That's a bit too much acidity for me, so I just sweeten it to my taste.

Please share your results. I like jamaica but also find it too sweet at times. Hubby loves it, though, nice and sweet.

I've made it for years from the semi dried flowers sold in the marketplace. All over Mazatlan, even Walmart, had the flowers. I just take a bunch, steep them in a big pot and add sugar later. The stuff I make is a sort of concentrate and can be diluted as needed. It's much easier to store that way. Be careful though, it stains like crazy.

Thanks. I could try making the "concentrate." But like iced tea, it is preferable to add the sugar into hot liquid. A friend buys bottled jarabe to sweeten hers by the glass.
The lime and salt interested me.

Sugar is one of the most harmful food product you can eat. I make jamaica by brewing it then add grape or cranberry grape juice. It is very refreshing. Yes, fruit juice has sugar but it is a natural sugar and not as concentrated.

I don't know why my reply was empty...I'll try again. Shorter this time. Have you found the guy who makes cocochata for the kids getting out of school? Over by the Gigante north of town?
