Originaly, Half & Half was just that; half cream and half whole milk. As Denis mentioned, many people use it in their coffee. I use it in some receipes that call for cream just to cut the fat and calorie count a little; clam chowder, fettuccine alfredo and just about any receipe that calls to be finished off with "cream".
