Gas Stoves with Temperature Controls

Has anyone ever seen for sale in a Mexican store a gas stove & oven that has a temperature control for the oven, OTHER THAN the dial with numbers 1 through 5?

Or is there a system for using those number to know how hot the oven is?

I don't do a lot of baking with temperatures here already close to 100'F (although it has backed off a little the last few days into the low 90's) I will probably not be doing a lot of baking or roasting in the very near future. But I am outfitting a new house and need to buy a stove/oven.

When it was nippy this past January, those two or three weeks we have that might pass for winter, it was nice to heat up the oven and bake cookies, or a pizza, or make a pork roast for Sunday dinner. I have to say I guessed fairly well as my things turned out OK, but I have no idea now where I set the temperature in the oven and duplicating the successes will be another guessing game.

And how in the world do you broil anything with these Mexican gas ovens? Maybe I have only seen low-end models that don't have such a feature (I had a gas stove/oven NoB that had a broiler feature) but I have looked in every store here I can think of and all I have ever seen are Acros, Mabe, Bosch, and an occasional Whirlpool. And they all have the same temperature control system, 1 through 5.

Mexican-made Mabe stoves are sold everywhere in Mexico. Look in Elektra, FAMSA, Sears, Home Depot, etc etc.

Mine is most similar to Mabe Model EM3061. It's an excellent stove; I really love it. Mine has 2 super-large burners, two regular burners, and one long oval burner in the center of the stove top. All burners and the oven have electronic ignition. The capello de cristal is a hinged tempered crystal lid for the stove top, a really wonderful feature IMHO. The oven heat control knob is calibrated in degrees Centigrade, but I also have a Fahrenheit thermometer hanging from one of the oven racks. I brought that little thermometer back from the States.

My stove has no broiler. Most mid-range stoves made in Mexico have no broilers. However, if you go to a kitchen design center (and yes, you will find some in Hermosillo), you'll find that you can ask for any kind of stove extant. Viking, Wolf, separate stove top, wall oven, broilers, anything.

My other opinion (there's no lack of them) is that an estufa empotrable (appears to be built-in) is much superior in looks and ease of cleaning to a stove that sits up on legs on the floor.

We bought a General Electric branded stove, but actually made by Mabe. It has 6 burners; two extra large and 4 regular. All have the piezoelectric ignition; including the oven. The oven has two racks, and there's a temperature dial, which controls the heat pretty well. Like Esperanza, we have a U.S. thermometer in the oven, graduated in both Centigrade and Farenheit. I couldn't bake as effectively without it it.

We didn't choose a model with a glass top, as we couldn't see the use of it. We had the shop (Mueblería Nueva, in Pátzcuaro) swap out the comal for an extra top burner grid.
We are quite happy with our purchase.

My Whirlpool, purchased at either Sears or Fabricas de Francia (Liverpool) in Morelia, has both Centigrade and Fahrenheit markings on the oven.
