Fruit Waters

Fruit-flavored water drinks are quite common around here. Today my neighbor invited me over for a carne asada lunch. They served a ‘water’ I had not had before -– cucumber. I was pleasantly surprised. Not bad, although there are others I like better.

Thus far I have had these fruit ‘waters.’ Can you add to the list?

Cantaloupe
Cucumber (better than it sounds, but it has an after taste)
Grape
Jamaica
Lime
Mango*
Orange
Papaya*
Peach
Pineapple (my favorite)
Strawberry
*I can do without, thank you.

Mmmmm...aguas frescas! In addition to Rolly's list, here are some others I like:

Piña con alfalfa...........................pineapple with alfalfa--this one is my favorite
Guayaba....................................guava
Guayaba con fresa.....................guava with strawberry
Limón con chía...........................key lime with chía (remember chía pets, or Paddy O'Hair? For the drink, we use the seeds.)
Horchata....................................rice with cinnamon
Cebada.......................................barley
Ciruela.......................................plum
Sandía.......................................watermelon
Tuna..........................................prickly pear

Last week we had comida in SMA and were served "oatmeal" water at a little family place. It was surprisingly good.

I've decided that this posting was unfair so I'm censoring myself.

Sounds interesting, but to stay on topic, add TEQUILA!
Shortly after arriving in town, we went to a recommended restaurant and were served something red in a glass. Too sweet and yucky. I asked for water, with no luck. Even asked in my halting Spanish. The waiter brought some more of the red stuff and gave me a dirty look. Ah well. Should have just asked for beer. Or tequila.

One of my best friends -- Belgian -- serves aguas frescas made of all kinds of fruit at her gatherings. Kids drink 'em straight, while a dash of rum goes into the adult pitchers.

I think she's brilliant. And her European guests are thrilled with fresh fruit served with winter sunshine.

(Me too.)

I swear, I think Mexicans will grind just about anything up and put in a glass with sugar!
My suegra makes an aloe vera drink for my suegro when he works to hard and comes home exhausted. It doesn't taste very good, but apparently is great for what ails you.
She also goes out in the back yard and comes back with a handful of bark and leaves and flower buds and boils them into a tea to relieve the stuffiness and aches of a cold.

But as for Aguas Frescas, my favorites are Jamaica, Limon, and Arroz (or Horchata). They are the most refreshing on a hot summer day. They also chase the picoso off my tounge.
My husband drinks the alfalfa water mentioned by Esperanza, which to me is like chewing on grass.
I tried the Mixta, which was 5 or 6 different fruits, one time at La Michoacana and didn't like it very much. I also like agua de coco, which is basically doctored up coconut milk.

We made our combination one night of coconut milk, orange juice, limes, and Oso Negro ginebra. It was actually pretty good. Mabye too good, my head hurt in the morning.

What happens down in Mexico...Stays in Mexico.

Thought on the subject of fruit water made with coconut milk: Coconut is right up there on the list of things to avoid re cholesterol. Tastes a lot better than oatmeal water, though.

Off the subject: how come there is this elegant reverse relationship between things that taste good and those that are supposed to be good for you? Unfair.
