Do you use tortillas after living in Mexico?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I still don't use tortillas at home but I also do my own cooking. I'm wondering if some ex-pats have switched to tortillas as a main food or not? (I'm reading Que vivan los tamales! by Jeffery Pilcher which describes food history of Mexico.)

We rarely buy tortillas, and sometimes they are flour tortillas, even whole wheat ones. Most machine-made corn tortillas taste like blotting paper to me. Last trip to the mercado I did buy 24 handmade tortillas which weren't bad.
However, I do eat the tasty, huge, freshly made tortillas de maíz that come with the birría at Birrería Don Prisci here in Pátzcuaro. And then, there are tacos...gotta have las tortillas chiquitas for tacos.

As I bake bread at home, and sometimes buy it at panaderías, we do eat a lot of bread.

Saludos,
Anonimo

The last time I was in Patz, I stayed at
Posada de la Salud, and about three doors
down was a joint that specializes in Menudo.

Do you know the name of it?

I cannot remember and did not write it down.

Thanks, Lavanda

Hi Zoe,

I never excelled at making corn tortillas while living in or out of Mexico.

At first I enjoyed the taste of the manufactured corn tortillas but when the novelty wore off, I didn't fancy them much. Did enjoy ones made by hand when finding them.

THEN...daughter dearest learned to make tortillas by hand...and most other traditional Mexican foods as prepared in the Colima countryside.

In four years of her cooking a lot for our family, we've eaten kilos of tortillas!

Made fresh for many meals. And chilaquiles for breakfast now and again.

Now she's moved out on her own, and taken the wooden tortilla press that her dad, made for her, when the metal ones kept breaking with so much use.

So back to my speciality, wheat flour tortillas...made via rolling pin!

The only thing worse than machine made tortillas in Mexico is Mexican bread and sweetbreads which are generally the worst bread products on the planet. No contest. The worst breads to be found anywhere. Practically inedible rustic concoctions with no intrinsic value..

Someone should tell the emporer he has no clothes.

I tried but he was too busy looking for good Mexican bread and wouldn't listen.

I eat freshly made corn tortillas nearly every day. I occasionally buy hand made flour tortillas at a tianguis near my house in Guadalajara. I also usually buy a couple of bolillos (for making molletes) at the tianguis.

I buy a loaf of siete semillas (whole grain and full of different types of seeds) bread at a nearby bakery about once a month.

I eat a lot of frijolitos, too--sometimes a couple of times a day, along with whatever guisado I've prepared. The ones I cook most often are peruanos.

However, today's comida was pizza Italiana from Costco. No tortillas or frijolitos were in sight, but I loaded the pizza with jalapeños en escabeche.

While indispensable for enchiladas, chilaquiles and tacos, all of which are eaten off-premises, tortillas are consumed in my house only as a peripheral or ceremonial food. I'd venture to say that most expats have not made tortillas their main food group. Nor do they seem to have made beans a major part of their diet.

Tortilla consumption among expatriates might be better guaged by observing purchasing patterns.

I love frijoles and always have, even before moving to Mexico. I usually serve them in one form or another three times a week. I keep a couple of small cartons frozen for the times when I have a bean emergency. I'm not a big breakfast person and sometimes when I'm bored with what is here I eat beans for breakfast. My esposo just shakes his head. Speaking of bread, at the risk of being booed by the bread aficonados, have you had the new Bimbo bread, Multigrano Linaza? It boasts of 6 grains. I am not a bread fan and hate Bimbo but this one is wonderful toasted.

I have to agree with you on the Multigrano Linaza - amazingly tasty for a Bimbo product. We just had visitors from NOB who thought it was very good sandwich bread too.

I must be the exception, I eat tortillas almost daily. I make a soft taco or burrito out of almost all meals. If having scrambled eggs, I like to add some salsa to the eggs and roll them up in the tortilla, frijoles the same. When eating chili con carne or chili verde I always fold the food up in a tortilla, adding chili, avacado and munch up. My preferred tortillas are of maiz. Tortillas are excellent served with fajitas de pollo or arrachara. For my taste tortillas, frijoles, chili and avacados are a staple in my diet. My wife and I don't make tortillas. We buy them in mercado and keep them in the freezer, heating them up on a hot comal as needed.
Thank God for Mexican food, I love it and it is one of the reasons I chose Mexico for retirement.

Did you always eat tortillas, then? If so, from what part of the country, US, I assume.

I too love tortillas - however harina is my favorite. Coming to Mexico from NM we are well versed in tortilla eating. I can't justify eating the flour ones in Mexico as they are loaded with lard. A couple of times recently I have pulled out my son's recipe for flour tortillas and made my own. I make them, roll them out (I still don't have the nack of a perfect round one) my husband cooks them. Our worker comes in for coffee break each morning and his usual fare is toast and peanut butter but today we offered him one of our gringa made tortillas and he was licking his lips over it. Have you tried mashing up an avocado, sprinkling it with a seasoning salt and spreading it on your morning tortilla or toast? Yummy!

I have a Mexican friend who tantalized me into a tendency to eat tortillas the real Mexican way. When the plate of hot Mexican food has been served, including salsa, arroz y frijoles con algo mas Mexicano, the tortillas break out and then it begins.

The tortilla, be it de arena o de maize, it’s hand action consist of carefully tearing off just the right size/piece of tortilla and then another small piece and scooping up portions of your meal with kind of a lip smacking, very tasty, finger licking pleasure. Forks aren’t used.

I’ve seen other Mexicans eat this way in other Mexican restaurants I’ve frequented. I just don’t know but for some odd reason or another, this way is sure finger licking good! Is this uncommon or do you have to eat this way in the privacy of your own home? Laugh

You learn something new every day on this forum. I never knew that tortillas were torn in pieces to help pick up the food. I thought they were always just rolled with the food inside or torn pieces were used to fry to make nachos.

What Oscar describes is very common. When I eat at Doña Martha's house, she always gives me a fork and a spoon while the rest of the family uses torn tortillas.

Another common tortilla trick is to lay a tortilla in your open left palm and slide your right palm across the tortilla from fingers to wrist rolling the tortilla into a "bread stick." It takes a little practice to get it down to a single smooth motion. This makes a good pusher and a fine way to sop up the salsa from the meat.

Wednesday morning, while strolling an outlying neighborhood of Pátzcuaro (not in the Colonial Centro), I stopped for breakfast at a food stall. Among the guisados was a tempting Carne de Cerdo en Salsa Negra.
I ordered a plate, and when it was set in front of me, there were no utensils. I was able to eat it for a while with hot tortillas de maíz that were abundantly available, but eventually, with the help of my neighboring diner, I received a fork.

Buen provecho,

We were wondering what these road signs mean, on many roads in Michoacán.
Some had knife, fork and spoon on them.
