Calabazas By any Other Name . . . . . . . . . .

Rolly, rayitodeluna or any one else who may have the answers, to this one. Calabazas is also a favorite for me, but I only hear the word calabazas for squash which seems to cover any squash from spaghetti, pumpkin to zucchini squashes. Do not various specific varieties of the squash family have their own names in Spanish? If so what are some of the different ones. Sometimes I would like to buy a particular variety for cooking and don't know what the heck to call it. I really like baked Butternut Squash for example baked with real butter in the cavity after cutting in two with some allspice sprinkled over the top. How in the heck would I ask for a "Butternut" squash here in México?

Thanks,

Regards,

There is no Spanish word for butternut squash. Neither is there a Spanish word for acorn squash, or ordinary summer squash, or crookneck squash. Although squash is a native of Mexico, there are a great many squash varieties that are little known or unknown in this country.

Calabaza de castilla is a common variety here. http://mexicocooks.typepad.com/...0535e84efc970c-320wi
Calabacita is more or less equivalent to zucchini. http://www.artecreativo.net/.../jugo-calabacita.jpg
Chayote is another type squash that's frequently seen here. http://25.media.tumblr.com/...85t1rnzhkso1_500.jpg
Chilacayote is yet another variety, often used for making calabaza en tacha. http://www.clovegarden.com/...sq_xilicayota02e.jpg or http://mexicocooks.typepad.com/...-in-heavy-syrup.html

And now, an article from the UNAM: http://www.ejournal.unam.mx/cns/no42/CNS04210.pdf

This information should tell you way more than you want to know about squash in Mexico!
