Article on chiles in latest issue of Mexico Desconocido

The current issue (Sept) of Mexico Desconocido has a nice article on chiles. Probably nothing that the people who post here don't already know, but interesting just the same.

The article claims that Mexico is in 6th place in production of chile, behind China, Spain, Turkey, Nigeria and India.

We have probably 50 (+/-) bushes producing a huge quantity of chile piquín out at our orange grove. They just grow wild out there. At least they do if they don't get cut down by a machete before they grow big enough to be recognized for what they are.

Would you believe...a huge amount of the dried chile de árbol that is sold in Mexico is actually imported from China? It's always labeled as Chinese and is less expensive than the real deal grown here--Mexican chile de árbol is considered to be much more flavorful and much more desireable.

I'm surprised. Even though Mexico isn't the world's biggest producer of chile, you'd think they'd grow enough to be autosufficient. Seems like carrying coals to Newcastle, to me.

Global economy I suppose. Always someone hungry enough to make it cheaper. I suppose soon we'll be importing corn. Oh, wait, we already do that. ;-)

Maybe we need to spread some chile de árbol seeds around out at the grove....
