"tequisquite" - "Tequisquipan"

Hola! Soy Bill Aqui! You know, if you study 'La Cocina Mexicana" long enough you begin to make associations! In some regions of Mexico certain ingredients are added to the "masa" when making "tamales" for leavening (or to make the dough puff a bit). From my experience over the years, these ingredients, seem to be numerous. I know of at least three ingredients that are known to be used for this purpose: The simmered husks of the "tomatillos", or sometimes called "tomate verde" (and, by the way, at least six other different names)!!!! Also an ingredient called "tequisquite" (which I have purchased in small bags, and has the appearance of a of an evaporated surface mineral, and a little bit of dirt (appealing, right?). Also, baking powder, as we know it, is also added to "masa" for the same purpose. There is a location, town, community, (area) in Mexico called "Tequisquiapan"!! Do you suppose this mineral is collected there?? Any info. would be greatly appreciated?? Also, Rob (back a few posts ago) asked about an ingredient called "relajo"! I don't recall referencing anything with this name in my library of roughly 25 books (in Mexican Spanish) and about the same number in English written on traditional Mexican Cuisine. However, now (being very curious) I am forced to look up this ingredient (if it exists)!! Hope everyone is having a great day, evening, night, or what ever it is where you are?
