I saw one of these things on a nice leisurely jaunt through a small pueblo called Canticas, Veracruz. Now I have a name to put to its ugly mug.

"Possum"...

It is a general term which in English translates to Possum where I am from, or more properly "Opossum". The Common species, _Didelphis marsupialis_ Linnaeus (1758) (mispelled in the link provided by Quevedo) was named by Karl von Linné in his book that invented animal scientific nomenclature in 1758, "Natural Systematics."
As it is a general name, there are about 75 species worldwide to which it applies. A few occur in Mexico. Most are sadly common "roadkill" another name which unfortunately almost fits.
The little one in Quevedo's link in English is the:
Mexican Mouse Possum (Opossum)
The Common Possum you probably saw, which I mention above looks just like the US species, the Virginia Possum, which hillbilly's have been know to eat, and have whiter snouts but otherwise look alike.
The Water Possum mentioned in Quevedo's interesting, but inaccurate link, should be _Chironectes minimus_, is incorrectly identified as to the Hononectes genus (scientific name) as far as I can tell.
There is nothing particularly odd or exotic about these marsupials in Mexico, especially for some of the other members of the Possum family, though some of the Mexican species are at risk of extinction and hopefully we can conserve them.
Best...David(MTY) gone hunting possum with Daisy Duke. Estimado Sr. Quevedo;
: : coladeras, alcantarillas
: Sewer.
Saludos;
Hank

El tlacuachito también se come acá en México. Se pela, se pone a coser, y muchos piensan que el caldo (tal como la carne) es muy saludable y cura muchas enfermedades, por ejemplo si uno tiene la presión alta, se baja con el caldo de tlacuache.
