translation challenge

Hi...

I was talking with a native Spanish speaker. She brought up the experssion below and we talked about how it might be translated without losing the meaning. Couldn't do it.

She says: Gracias
He says: Las que te adornen.

Suggestions?

Me rindo. No encuentro una traducción que no cambie el significado.

La razón: en este contexto, gracias tiene dos significados muy diferentes: Thanks; y grace, como atributo de la persona.

Un detalle: Gracias las que te adornan.

How about this play on words?

She says: Gracias meaning Thank you.

He says: Las [gracias] que te adornan. Meaning
Those graces (wonderful attributes) that adorn (become) you.

Spanish speaking people are always playing around with words--and this, if I'm correct in my interpretation, is a piropo.

Excellent, but if you were hired to translate a story/play in which the characters said the Spanish, how would you translate the lines into English? That's the part, I believe, that prompted Señor Quevedo to say that "gracias tiene dos significados muy diferentes", which as you mention, they do.

Y, estimado Quevedo, es porque no hay dudo sobre las gracias de ella que decimos "adornan" y no "adornen"?

Saben, hay algunas cosas que no se pueden (ni se deben) traducir.

Esta hilerita me pone a pensar en una canción que canta Paquita La del Barrio:

"Gracias por acordarme de mi madre
Es que hace bastante tiempo
Que no me la recordaban
Con un lenguaje florido.
Gracias, te agradezco tu cumplido
Y sin hacer tanta bulla
Te suplico que también
Me saludes a la tuya."

Sí, se puede traducir literalmente--pero después ¿que? No tiene ni chiste.

Hola,

Esperanza is right. It is really not translateable. However, on the stage actors fight for every word and I can see this Romeo needing to say something. The standard >Your welcome< is too banal to utter. So, I would have him say, depending on his relationship with this Juliet something like >You're wonderful< or >For you, anything< or >You're so lovely<, probably this latter phrase because it introduces the word love. It almost gets the idea of the piropo across---that of turning something routine into a compliment to the lady.

Put yourself in this Romeo's place and think of something you would say in the same situation.

Me parece muy buena la idea del amigo Jerezano. Thanks, you're wonderful, funciona muy bien, y se acerca más a "Gracias las que le adornan".

En español decimos algo parecido: "Gracias. Eres un encanto".

Así es, y esa idea la expresa el tiempo del verbo. Adornan es presente de indicativo, mientras que adornen es presente de subjuntivo. En la oración Gracias las que te adornan hablamos en indicativo. En la frase Espero que las gracias te adornen hablamos en subjuntivo, y por eso usamos el tiempo adornen.
