ser vs. estar and preterito vs. imperfecto

I've pretty much nailed down the subjunctive mood, but I still have trouble deciding between ser and estar and el pretértio vs. el imperfecto. I think I can recite the rules, but I'm generally confused when speaking. Can anyone offer a suggestion for praciticing these grammar issues?

Ser, soy is used for a condition that cannot or will not change. Yo soy un gringo, yo soy muy tonto, yo soy un hombre, yo soy un maestro, yo soy un carpentero.

Estar, estoy is used for a condition that will or can change. Estoy perdido, estoy aqui,

Hope this helps.
