need TV Show suggestions

Can't Post |
Hi Spanish Learners:

As part of our continuing Spanish education, my husband and I want to take up watching a nightly TV show in Spanish. We have about 20 basic cable channels (and we live in Mexico), so we should be able to find something we like, right? However, we aren't all that fond of most TV shows and we don't like to watch the dubbed ones. We want to watch something on every night, between 6 and 9 p.m. We'd be willing to try a soap (if it isn't TOO overly sappy). Any suggestions?

thanks! kgs

Just pick one of the soaps, watch it for a while and then it grows on you. I couldn't stand them at first, and I am trying not to get hooked on another one. Every time we go to Mexico we end up starting to watch one with my sister-in-laws, (they always have at least one that they watch every day) and becuase there isn't much else on. Then when we get home, in few months it starts up here in the US and we want to see the end of the show. I don't have a particular one to suggest, depends if your in Mexico or here, but there is one that is going to start again here that we saw the end of called "La Mentira". Even my husband liked it.

For beginners or near-beginners I'd suggest children's shows for simple everyday vocabulary; for intermediate students, I'd suggest news (first watch international news in English, then Spanish to help fill in the blanks in similar reports).; for advanced students, Caribbean or South American soap operas can give you a chance to tune your ear to various accents, and comedies can give you a chance to see how well you understand jokes.

Interesting, but Spanish langguage soaps don't go on forever. They end. One that I got a real kick out of (and was so popular they made more episodes after it ended) is "Beti, la Fea." Now, I don't know if they show it in Mexico. It is on Univision. It is a hoot.

One good program for beginners might be Plaza Sesamo (Sesame Street) on weeknds early.

Another (intermediate / advanced) is Sabado Gigante on Saturday nights. I try to watch Jorge Ramos, anchorman

for Univision news out of Miami in the afternoon, after watching English news.

Also Galivisión in the early morning gives México news (En Contraste)

Just some thoughts. No soaps come to mind. One that was popular a few years past was

Tu y Yo. Don´t know if it´s still on. Osito

I'M KIND OF PARTIAL TO CNN IN ESPAÑOL, BUT I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON YOUR SPANISH PROFICIENCY.

SOAPS ARE GOOD THE SAPPIER THE BETTER AS FAR AS LEARNING THE LANGUAGE I HAVE FOUND.

YOU'LL LEARN EVERY DAY TERMS AND GET A PEEK INTO THE DRAMATIC CORE OF THE MEXICAN CULTURE. LIKED BETTY LA FEA (VENEZUELAN) NOT SURE IF IT STILL RUNS AND ALSO LA DUDA (MEXICAN) ON TV AZTECA AT 8:00 PM. I KNOW SOME PEOPLE LIKE MUSIC SHOWS LIKE LATIN MTV

IF YOU GET HOOKED IT WILL MEAN YOU'RE PROGRESSING IN PROFICIENCY. GOOD LUCK!

There is a good telenovela right now, called Clase 406. You should watch it, its on at 7pm, with the bunny ears where I am. I haven't seen it very much in the last month or so. But its full of cute Mexican schoolgirls running around in their school girl uniforms. TV at its finest. I saw it tonight for a minute or two at Commercial Mexicana, so I know its still going on..... You should check it out....

Its good because they speak Mexican Spanish, big time. You hear all the slang words, etc.

When I was in Canada, I was watching La Intrusa every day, even videotaping it when I couldn't see it. I loved that show.

Oh, yeah! our cute girls ;) I catched a bit of it when my brother's gf came over and took over my tv. They use a lot of the new/current slang like girls calling each other "guey" hehe...too funny.

Enjoy!

BIG OOOOOOPS!!!! MEANT TO SAY "CAUGHT" :p

Que tooooooooorpe :) Thanks, jturpen!

One of the problems of "talking" online is that your fingers don't always translate what your mind is thinking.

bueno, ni moscas (I know. I'm going to confuse someone with that expression:P)

OK ... wasn't it the last go-round with dichos where we found out about sleeping on your ear to iron your pants? I remember that ...
and now we have bueno, ni moscas = good, nor flies

so I'm guessing it is something like 'una gorda muchacha no puede cha-cha'

close?

bueno, ni moscas = good, nor flies

I think it is like saying it is really less important than flies.

How about: No habla con pelos en la lengua.

HAHAHA....NOOOOOO "ni moscas"="ni modo" :P

It's common to substitute words like...

nada=naranjas
ni maiz/ni moscas=ni modo
tacuarucho/tacuache=taco
que ondiux=que onda
nos vidrios=nos vimos

lots more..just can't remember right now.

Okey, maguey.
No mameyes en tiempo de melones = No mameyes = No mame$ = No molestes.
Agüelita = Abuelita = A huev* = A fuerzas = Aunque no quieras = Claro que sí.
Ni máiz camotes = Ni madre$ = No.
No manches = No mame$ = No molestes.
A güev*s caldo = A huev* = A fuerzas = Aunque no quieras = Claro que sí.
No jorobes = No jod@$ = No molestes.
No tiznes = No chingu&$ = No molestes.

¿Alguien se acuerda de más?

Saludos,

te la bañaste!:) (means you did something wrong)

"te la bañaste, Pedro! eso no esta bien."

ya estufas=ya estuvo (alright, ok, that's it)

You should watch Otro Rollo with Adal Ramones. You'll learn a lot of slang there. I think he comes out on saturday nights around midnight.
