I was watching a movie critis (in Spanish of course) speak about the movie Big Fat Greek Wedding and he said "la cinta Big Fat Greek Wedding..." Is there another way to say "the movie" or is "la cinta" the only translation.

There are several ways to say 'the movie'. La película: Me gustó mucho la película Big Fat Greek Wedding. El cine: Vamos al cine a ver Big Fat Greek Wedding. La cinta: Fuimos a ver Big Fat Greek Wedding pero se les quebró la cinta y no la pasaron. Each of these has a slightly different connotation, much like 'film', 'movie', and 'cinema' have in English. NB: listen for giggles if you use 'en cinta' to describe a film. Look THAT up in your Funk and Wagnall's.

Actually, using "cinta" instead of "pelicula" is done, usually by movie reviewers. I don't think anybody says it in real life.

Lupita está en cinta = Luptas is pregnant. No?: Actually, using "cinta" instead of "pelicula" is done, usually by movie reviewers. I don't think anybody says it in real life.

This is a question relating to language registers: in the normal or informal register, any Mexican would say "película", in a more formal situation they would use "cinta" instead. One golden rule in Spanish, especially in written formal texts, is to avoid repeating the same word every second sentence. Therefore, film critics, who normally read out a text, would use several synonims not to repeat the word película every 30 seconds (filme, cinta, "propuesta cinematográfica", "trabajo", etc)."Este año, Guillermo del Toro nos presenta uno de sus mejores trabajos de los últimos años. Sus películas más recientes habían sido buenas, pero la cinta que ahora lleva a las pantallas es simplemente excelente y será, probablemente, la mejor propuesta cinematográfica que el cineasta nos dé en mucho tiempo."

Las palabras película, cinta y filme son sinónimas. Pero de acuerdo se oyen mas en las primeras dos formas.
