For years I've heard both I take it they both mean down payment.Which of the two is prefered? In the states and Mexico Ive heard sin enganche.

I think you mean enganche w/o sin. They are very similar in meaning. Sometimes anticipo is a payment used as a guarantee that you will actually purchase something i.e. a special order of something not normally carried by a store. "Sin enganche" means no down payment. "Enganche" means a down payment with a series of payments following, for example, on a car."Anticipo" is payment on something before the work has started.
