When can I attach the object pronouns to a verb?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello,

On a different thread "estado" Blackjack Davie asked the question:
>>>
When can I attach object pronouns to the verb?
<<<

That question is apparently lost there so I am posting it here as a new thread.

I gave him an answer which is correct to the best of my knowledge but I feel we need a grammarian here. Perhaps Sr. Queveo or Esperanza or other student more experienced than I am would like to respond.

Adiós. jerezano.

No one has answered, so I will take a shot at an answer.

I missed the original thread, but the only time I could think of off the cuff to attach the object pronouns to the verb is for imperatives.

"Dimelo" is actually Give (Di) it (lo) to me (me).

This web site says that the object pronouns are attached to the verb for affirmative commands, which sounds right to me.

http://www.studyspanish.com/lessons/commrev1.htm

This web site says the object pronouns are after the verb for affirmative commands, infinitives, and gerunds.

http://spanish.about.com/...objectpronouns_2.htm

Example: "Me voy" for "I am leaving", but "Voy a irme." for "I am going to go". But perhaps this example is a reflexive instead of an object pronoun. Better example: "Voy a comerlo" for "I am going to eat it". Comer being the infinitive. "Lo comeré" is "I will eat it", but using the future tense, so the pronoun is before the verb.

Perhaps a real grammarian will step in. ;-)

Hello,

Thanks to raferguson for the two web sites which he cites.

The examples given are correct.

He also said:>>This web site says the object pronouns are after the verb for affirmative commands, infinitives, and gerunds.<<<

It would have been clearer if that web site which he cited had said that "object pronouns are attached to the end of verbs for affirmative commands, infinitives, and gerunds."

And that web site is correct in emphasizing that objects are attached to AFFIRMATIVE commands only. The negative commands require them to go in the normal in-front-of location. ¡No me digas eso!, or No me lo digas, for example.

They NEVER stand alone after a verb. They always go in front of the verb if not attached. Or so I have been taught.

¿Dónde está el Sr. Quevedo?

Adiós. jerezano.
