Sur amate de mar y montaña

The above book about Guerrero is published by the Secretaria de Educación Pública. However, I don't understand the title. "amate" appears to be a kind of tree, but I can't wrap my mind around it in the context of this title. Any help? Thanks

I'm having trouble with this, too, but DRAE does mention that amate in Mexico can refer to a painting made on the under-bark of the tree you mention. Does that make any more sense in this context? What's the book about?

is it just "sur amate de mar y montaña" or is it more like "sur - amate de mar y montaña"? (the latter making more sense) there's also papel de amate which is paper made from that tree. If it's making reference to the paintings, then it would make sense - "the" south: painting of sea and mountain.

my two cents

Creo que tiene usted razón en su explicación, amigo Rey.

A beautiful site featuring amate paper art:

"Sur: amate de amr y montaña" makes more sense but the title is definitely without the colon. The book is publishe by the dept of education, so probably trying to get the students thinking. By the way, thanks for the link, very interesting.

is there a difference in the font size/color? You don't necessarily need a colon just a way to put them apart.

I tried to attach a scan of the book cover, but it did not allow me to upload it because of its size. I'll try to e-mail it to you. Thanks
