Spanish lessons

Mexonline shows about 10 different cities where you can go for as short as one week for immersion classes. They all sound wonderful so I am wondering if anyone here has taken or knows of someone who has taken a class, what is the best city and what is the best school? I love speaking Spanish but I need some help, taking too long doing it myself. Thanks for any advice. Norma

I strongly recommend Morelia and the Baden-Powell Institute. You can see what the school offers here: http://www.baden-powell.com/.

Morelia is a marvelous, cultured, easily manageable city, filled with history and beauty. The weather is generally wonderful, too. During the summer-fall rainy season, it's cool and damp. During the winter, it's sunny and dry during the day, with clear, starry nights.

You'll love it here.

I know that immersion classes are popular, but I have also heard that what you learn quickly you can forget quickly. Obviously if you don't practice what you learned you can lose it.

Keep in mind the option to get a tutor locally. This worked very well for me, I met the tutor once a week for one hour, paid around $20. I was able to get native speaker graduate students through the university.

Ideally, one would do both, get a tutor for ongoing improvement, and go to Mexico for some immersion.

Thank you so much. I checked out the Baden Powell website. I think I liked it when I looked awhile ago. Never been to Morelia and will check it out. I appreciate your taking the time to answer. Norma

Hi there. What city are you in? You mentioned a student from the university. I never really thouhgt about the combination of immersion and private lessons. It does sound like a good idea. I have so many Spanish speaking friends who correct my Spanish but won't speak Spanish with me...they say "We speak English." Anyway, with the help of great persons on this website I know the answer will turn up. Thanks a lot, Norma

I attended the Spanish Immersion school in Veracruz and loved it. The cost is only $650.00 u.s. a week and includes your room and two meals a day. This also includes field trips, five in town, two to local towns. http://www.veracruzspanish.com/

Were you in the Capitol of Vera Cruz?? Did you learn? This is really my main thought, yes, I want a nice city, good lessons, fair price but I want to learn. And someone mentioned "if you learn fast, it goes away fast too." I would not want what I learned and what I spent hundreds of dollars on to "just go." Thanks so much for the feed back, I appreciate the input I have gotten so far. Norma

Yes, I was in the city of Veracruz. Not only did I learn but they showed me how to study, what to study, the importance of verbs and then to practice it on the 2 hour field trips each day. I have advanced so much further now and fell in love with Veracruz. I went in November when the weather is great.

Did I actually say Vera Cruz???????? I better get to class....FAST. I just looked up the website for the school you attended. I do have another question. I've been checking a number of schools and some are the price you quoted and some all the way to 1/2 that price. Do you have any idea about the quality of the less expensive schools??? Thanks, Norma

Hello normamc288,

You don't tell us where you are and you also sound confused. As if you don't really know where to go to learn Spanish and want someone to tell you. Not the right attitude. You will get many different opinions and you will need to filter those.

1) There are many good Spanish schools here in Mexico
2) Prices vary all over the lot
3) Climates vary all over the lot
4) Teaching methods vary all over the lot
5) Quality of teaching varies all over the lot

You don't say where you are now. If you are here in México and in a fairly large city with a University, Fergueson's advice to get a private tutor is probably the best advice of all.

1)Tutor prices vary all over the lot
2) Tutor quality varies all over the lot
3) Tutor reliability and compliance varies all over the lot

Now with that said, in my own experience the quality of the teaching at the Institute of Modern Spanish in Mérida is the best which I have encountered in all of the various schools I have attented in Mexico. Some 5 or so.

Its prices are reasonable as is a home stay and the teaching is no-nonsense and by qualified University and Middle School professionals.

But the climate is HOT. The cost of transportation to Mérida and return may be more than you would like to pay.

So here is what you need to do:

What type of climate do I want?
What type of lodging do I want? home stay or nearby hotel?
What type of learning do I want? Strictly Spanish, Some Spanish but some Tourist activity as well, Mostly Tourist activity with some Spanish, really all Tourist but in Spanish?

But the most important question of all is Can I get my instruction right here where I am?

If you can get nearby teaching that should probably be the most economical. If you could go to a nearby school or University and visit any of their English Classes you would no doubt find several students of English who would be happy to tutor you in Spanish in exchange for English practice, or possibly small (to us) hourly peso charges. Those tutors also can act as guides to the city attractions and lasting friendships can be made (Don't fall in love with your tutor!) Quality of those tutors would need to be vetted by you, yourself. But an unsatisfactory arrangement can just as easily be cancelled and replaced. Schools on the other hand are contracts which in many cases cannot be cancelled.

Of course if you are in the United States instead of Mexico, then a Spanish school somewhere whether in Mexico or some other Spanish speaking country is the way to go because Tutor prices in the US can be in excess of $50 usd an hour.

San Miguel de Allende has some excellent schools, Morelia has some, Guadalajara has some, Cuernavaca has some, Mexico City has some, Veracruz has some, Puebla has some and I could go on and on. Google search for Spanish Language Schools + country desired.

If you must go to a Spanish School, you will get the most benefit from one-on-one instruction which is a bit more expensive but worth every extra dollar. And a home stay while there is in my opinion the only way to go. It is more economical than a hotel and at the same time it is continuing Spanish classes with some culture and customs thrown in. Lasting friendships can also be built in a home stay.

In other words decide what you want and then act. Don't let us try to tell you where to go. The only thing we can tell you is our own experiences.

¡Que tengas buena fortuna!

jerezano

Hey, I am not in Mexico right now. I have my house on the market and as soon as it sells I am moving back down. The reason I was asking was simply to get feedback. The feedback I got yesterday and today was great. I would never have thought of Morelia and the price is perfect. However, I love Veracruz, almost double the price of some of the other schools. I also like the idea of a tutor but I think I would prefer in a class. Anyway, I gladly take in any and all advice, filter it all but then make my own decision. I cannot wait to get back to Mexico and I can if I decide to rent the house but I prefer to sell now that I know I will move permanently. I also totally loved that the weather in Moralia seems as if that is what I would like. This website gives me lots of info and I really appreciate that as well as all the time you took to help me sort out what I am looking for. Thanks, Norma

Hello norma,

Good. You sound as if you know what you want. Much better than in your first post. So just a few more considerations.

The weather in Morelia is a lot better than in Veracruz. Veracruz tends to be quite hot and muggy in the Summer and can suffer from terrible Northers in the Winter. If you really love Veracruz City then perhaps you might think about Xalapa the capital of the state where there is the University of Veracruz with all the cultural advantages plus an altitude of some 2000 ft above sea level which ameliorates the climate considerably. Contact el gringo jalapeño on these foro or the Veracruz forum in particular for more information about Xalapa or about Veracruz City and environs. Xalapa is close enough to Veracruz City itself for easy special trips. On the other hand Morelia can offer you everything that Veracruz City can offer with the exception of the sea and the port activities.

You also say that you think you would prefer a class in a Spanish School. Good. So what do you want out of that class? Do you want intensive Spanish? Do you want to learn how to cook in Spanish? Do you want to learn how to play the Guitar (in Spanish), do you want to take a tour every week, do you want...?
Unless you are a rank beginner in Spanish I think you will find the one-on-one idea much to your advantage. The one-on-one idea is really private tutors (or tutor) at a special bargain rate. And you can control the classes.

Some Spanish Language Classes offer a vacation in México rather than really intensive Spanish classes. So evaluate your wants first and then look for a school which will fulfill those wants; then, and only then, do you start considering prices and your budget.

As for sale of your house in the United States, nobody can offer you advice there, particularly in these times. But as an experienced landlord (using rental agents) of more than 30 years, there are many Federal income tax advantages as well as the steady income advantage of renting your home. If the Federal income tax advantages are not important to you, then perhaps the steady income might be.

Come on down to México and enjoy your time here. México is offering real bargains right now in this time of crisis.

jerezano.

See why I like this forum??? Really good advice from persons who know. I basically have taught myself Spanish. I travel all over Mexico every chance I get, I travel alone, and I pick up words and sentences and the Mexican people love when I speak Spanish to them and they understand. It's a combination of verbal and hands. The only problem is I have to stop and think and sometimes I cannot get the right word (which brings huge laughter to all) so that is why I am anxious to go to school. I want to be proficient in communicating with Spanish speaking persons. About the house. I did rent it out last year and did not use a rental agency as the boy is in the military, banks where I do and the money was in my acct. first of every mo. He got transferred. I don't know at this time if I am willing to do that again. I really do not need the end of year deductions. I just want to have very little mental concerns, just hit the road, settle in Mexico and then take side trips to see all of Mexico I have missed....Oaxaca and Puebla. And then South America. I actually have considered Xalapa and have checked it out many times. I love the beach having grown up in MA. and summering in ME. And now 30 miles to Corpus Christi. I spent a time in Melaque a block from the beach and in Tecolutla on the beach. As well as La Pesca, on the beach. Well, one more month or possibly two and I am gone. I cannot wait, I believe this house will sell, it's cute. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR YOUR INDEPTH HELP. Norma

Morelia is the city I took Spanish lessons, at Baden-Powell Institute, also where I now live. I love the city and like the school. It is also where I got some advanced conversational lessons like I described this same day, comically but also quite seriously, in the thread "How to Talk Like a Native in No Time." There are also institutions here that cater to women clientele.

I think my problem is solved. I have a friend who lives in Saltillo. She says I should not pay, just come and stay with her for a few weeks and she will only speak Spanish with me. And some days go to her daughter's and practice. She has started writing me in Spanish and I am translating. I really do very well in the speaking, I just do not seem to have an ear to understand. My house has almost sold so I should be heading to Mexico very soon and hopefully in a few months be able to communicate. Everyone has been so wonderful, thank you.

it sounds like the balance of your time in the US is short. But I will toss this out anyway. I live in the Portland area and I attend two different "meet-up groups" that focus on Spanish conversation. Check out this website and simply input your location and what you are looking for meetup.com

These are FREE informal get-togethers, often associated with meeting at a restaurant or a city park in the summer, for a pot luck. The ONLY rules are to speak spanish (at all levels) for the two hour session. Frequently native speakers attend and are very helpful in so many ways. I have met some very good friends (ALL AGES) here in the area and we frequently get together for latin films, or finding a new Peruvian restaurant etc........

The meetup group on Friday nights - is really FUN....... and the leaders (native speakers) make it comfortable and fresh with new activities (word games)....etc.

Best of all FREE is............FREE..........

Norma good luck on returning to MX (smart move)..........Just curious.......are you the "Norma" I met with a frisky Airedale several years ago in Ajijic??? Our trusty Airedale has been hiking with me today on the Timberline trail at Mt Hood.....avoiding the HEAT of Portland.

Buena suerte

Nope, not that Norma. When you said Portland I thought you were talking about Texas near where I live. Ah well, I will definitely check out that web site. My final decision on the school is that right now not go. I have a number of friends who live in the Saltillo area and have suggested I just go and stay with them indefinitely and they will only speak Spanish with me. One of my friends suggested that before I come down I purchase one of those boards that you use magic marker on and then can erase, she said dollar store. That way she said that when I am out shopping and cannot understand the person's words I would ask him/her to write it. I speak enough Spanish to travel alone and get along just fine, it's that I have a really difficult time understanding. My friend sends me emails in Spanish which I am translating and then she corrects them. Several of my friends down in Mexico have suggested not spending the $500., more or less, on lessons when they can teach me for free.

I love that area up North. I lived in the state of Washington on a sailboat for a year and totally loved it. Would actually go back there in a minute.

Right now I finally sold the house and am sharing an apt. in San Antonio w/a friend till I make my plans. My great grand daughter will be born tomorrow so of course I am waiting for that.

Thanks for taking the time to respond and share your thoughts. Norma
