"Richard Ferguson?"

"Soy yo."

I was thinking about this dialog on a recent trip, and realizing that if somebody asks if I am Richard, I almost always answer, "Soy yo."

Obviously I could answer "Si", "Si, soy Ricardo". I am sure that there are at least 100 other possible responses that would be within reason.

Is "Soy yo" acceptable usage? Does it make sense? Will it be easily understood by Spanish speakers?

Obviously Soy yo only makes sense if the person already knows my name, and just needs to know if I am in fact the person he is looking for.

Richard

It's exactly what you say.

<Suena el teléfono>
<Richard> Bueno!
<voz> Eres tú, Richard?
<Richard> Soy yo, quién habla?
