Would anyone care to tackle an explanation of the uses of "pues"? I hear and see it a lot but it usually translates, at least in my mind, as "but" or "well." I think I'm missing the other nuances. The intermediate Spanish teachers I've had kind of glossed over it, apparently thinking we weren't sufficiently advanced to grasp the concept. (At that time they were probably right.)
Here are the Spanish and English dictionary entries I found:
pues conj 1 Ya que, debido a que, puesto que: «Esperamos las lluvias, pues aquí no hay agua», «Les gustó la obra pues estaba bien actuada», «No lo visité, pues no tuve tiempo» 2 En consecuencia, por lo tanto: «La solución del problema sirvió, pues, para unir grupos enemigos», «Su curación depende, pues, de que permanezca en cama», «Espero, pues, su más pronta respuesta», «Pues habría que pensarlo» 3 Subraya o enfatiza una expresión: «Pues sí», «Pues claro», «Pues se lo merecía», «Pues cállate», «Pues deja de molestar».
pues conj 1 for; since; because; inasmuch as. 2 then; therefore. --interj. well; why; well, yes. --pues bien, now then; well. --pues que, since; inasmuch as.
And then there's the ubiquitous "ya" ... but that's another subject.
