Con el mejor ánimo del mundo, quisiera proponer una discusión sana sobre los prejuicios que tenemos los mexicanos de los norteamericanos, y viceversa.

Ya sé que este es un debate peligroso; pero me parece un tema intercultural interesante, y si lo manejamos con madurez, con respeto y honestidad, a lo mejor podemos aprender un poco más de nosotros mismos y de nuestros respectivos pueblos y mentalidades.

Empiezo por poner algunos ejemplos de prejuicios que existen en México acerca de nuestros vecinos del Norte:

º Los norteamericanos son fríos y no tienen emociones.
º Son muy metalizados: sólo les importan el dinero y las cosas materiales.
º Los gringos no nos quieren y nos desprecian por nuestro color, nuestras costumbres y nuestra forma de ser.

Bienvenidas las opiniones, en español or in English.

Ay Quevedo...que buen tema, pero peligrosa a la vez como dices tú.

Otros prejuicios:

Que los mexicanos están atrasados en todo.
Que no les importa nada más que festejarse, emborracharse y escuchar música enormamente ruidosa.
Que todos viven al mismo nivel...muy bajo.
Que todos tienen 'demasiados' hijos.

Y una cosa que me molesta mucho: que los norteamericanAs siempre dicen algo parecido a, "What a sweet little woman, these Mexicans are just so cute." Qué desprecio.

¿Desde cuándo ha sido un desprecio echar un piropo a una linda mujer mexicana?

Sí, yo soy femenista también, pero el hecho que las mujeres tienen derechos iguales a los hombres no se hace necesaria que los hombres no puedan notar a una muchachachita bonita en pasar.

Hay un dicho de que los hombres deben ser fuerte, feo y formal. ¿No hay un dicho semejante sobre las mujeres que deben se ser ....?

Según mi punto de vista no es piropo decir 'this little woman etc'. Es más bien desprecio. Si una norteamericana lo dice así, es con un cierto tono de voz que quiere decir que 'this little woman' es menos que yo. Y casi siempre es una MUJER que lo dice de otra mujer. Y tampoco se dice cuando se ve pasar a una mujer. Se dice en el sentido de "this little woman who does my ironing is so blah blah blah".

Me da asco.

Que buena tema !! here are a few examples I've heard,

about americans :

they're rich, they're materialist but don't have ambition, they cheat on their husband, they're stressed out, they're weak, they're too liberal, they're bad lovers, they don't like children, they're depressed, they're invidualist

about mexicans :

they're poor, they're too ambitious but are not materialist, they cheat on their wife, they're lazy, they're macho, they're too religious, they're good lovers, they have big families, they're always having fiestas, they're altruist

Of course these are just prejudices...and they seems all false to me. Why judge an entire population on the sole behavings of certains??

Funny you should ask. Was out tonight with two other couples for supper. One guy criticized the Mexican government for not insuring that Mexican citizens did not cross the border illegally and indicated that illegal aliens were taking jobs from Americans. I told him that I had met Mexicans who had traveled 2000+ miles from Mexico to Minnesota to take on menial farm jobs which no American would stoop to do.

Then I attempted to explain how it was almost universally the responsibility of the country being entered to decide who entered and who did not. The argument fell on deaf ears. Got into a heated argument and left in a huff. Now my spouse is pissed at me, saying "what difference did it make?".

Personally, it makes a difference to me. I enjoy differences of opinion and logical discourse. I still, however, have great difficulty putting up with stupidity (ignorance is acceptable). I'm looking for sympathy. Thanks for listening.
