Mercy:
fiador is a person who lents money to someone without a warranty that he'll pay back. For example, many small stores in Mexico "fian" money to frecuent customers and they are supposed to pay bak in the following days.
aval on the other hand is a person who signs a contract in wich he/she commits to pay to a third party in case you don't pay them. You need an aval to buy a car for example.
I hope I helped you!
Regards

For what it's worth, here's the Oxford Spanish Dictionary definitions:
Aval: a) guarantee b)backing, support. Example: Contamos con el aval de 50 años de experiencia (we have 50 years experience behing us).
Fiador: guarantor. Example: salir fiador por alguien (to stand surety for somebody, to act as guarantor for somebody)
Fiado: on credit. Example: comprar (al) fiado (to buy on credit). Example: no vendemos (al) fiado (we don't sell on credit)
Cheers
