Ordinal Numbers

Are Spanish speakers in general moving away from the use of ordinal numbers? Or is it just that radio and television announcers are getting lazy? I've noticed increasingly over the past few years such usages in the media as veinticinco anniversario (instead of vigésimo quinto anniversario) or diecisiete edición (instead of decimoséptima edición). Today I heard a radio announcer refer to the cincuenta y nueve legislatura.

Does anyone know the reason for this apparent change in usage?

Me parece que, en muchos casos, esto sucede por simple flojera. Por supuesto que lo correcto es emplear la nomenclatura ordinal que provee el español; la Quincuagésima Novena Legislatura, por ejemplo, o el vigésimo quinto aniversario.

Estimado Quevedo,

Gracias por tu respuesta. Algo similar pensé yo -- y también se me occurió preguntar si no sería un cambio en el nivel de enseñanza en las escuelas modernas. Sea como sea, me da tristeza cuando un idioma tan dulce y lleno de romance no se usa correctamente.

In most cases the simpler cardinal numbers may be used in place of the ordinals above décimo."
