Nombre Soltera?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I was teaching an ESL class and talking about name structure in the USA vs. Mexico, and was talking about the US custom of "Maiden names". If Mary Ann Jones marries John George Smith, her new name is likely to be Mary Jones Smith, and we would call Jones her Maiden name. One of the students brought up "nombre soltera", which I am not sure about.

I think that this is what happens when a woman marries in Mexico. If Juan Jorge Garcia Macias marries Maria Ana Gallegos Marques, her new name is likely to become Maria Ana Garcia Gallegos. The children would be something like Thomas Ricardo Garcia Macias, taking on the father's family names, with no reference to either of the mother's family names. Do I have that right?

So what is the nombre soltera? Maria Ana Gallegos Marques? Gallegos?

Gracias de antemano. Respuestas en español son buenos también.

Ricardo

Su nombre de soltera sigue siendo María Ana Gallegos Márques por toda la vida. Su nombre de casada es María Ana Gallegos Márques de García Macías, o más común:

María Ana Gallegos de García (of or belonging to García).

Su hijo Juan se llamará Juan García Gallegos (father's surname + mother's surname).
