Re: [esperanza] Names in Mexico

About thirty years ago, at least in Morelia, names like Janitzio, Morelia, Yunuen, America, and Montserrat were fashionable. Lately the Church has been on a drive to encourage parents to name their children Mexican and biblical names. Of course, different standards are applied to various social classes. My maid and gardener went through the indecision when it came to naming their last child. The twins, named a decade ago, Maria Concepcion ("Conny") and Maria Asumpcion ("Chuey"), wanted to name their new sibling Annabella. But since the newborn was a boy, the parents landed up the name Jose Eduardo. There seems to be a greater tendency here: 1. For female children to be named after their mothers. 2. Using middle names as the individual's call name. 3. Application of nicknames which denote a physical characteristic or mannerism, e.g. Gordo, Gusano, Pelucas.
