Mint

Is there any easy way to explain the different types of mint?

spearmint ....... hierbabuena = plant, menta= flavor, pastilla de menta=candy (listed in one dictionary this way)
Peppermint ..... hierbabuena = plant, menta= flavor, menta verde=candy
mint............... menta

The only way I could explain the differences is to show pictures to someone the plant the flavor come from.

Trying to explain a different plant for Cream de Mint as it is none of the above was difficult. Since I drink Peppermint Schnapps my gf thought Cream de Mint was the same type of stuff but found out it was different when I put some on her ice cream, "very good" she said. She hates Peppermint Schnapps, "ugh medicina".

Are there slang terms for the different mints or how are these differences explained normally.

The Greeks thought mint cured hiccups, the Mexicans know this is wrong as lime and salt will do it. Try it the next time you have hiccups. Works!!!

For D.R.A.E. (Diccionario de la Real Academia Española), menta and hierbabuena are the same thing:

menta.
(Del lat. menta, y este del gr.).
1. f. hierbabuena.

For me they are almost the same thing, menta having smaller leaves and stronger flavor and aroma.

I agree, menta and hierbabuena are essentially the same thing. Occasionally you'll find that one region of the country will use one of the plants' names more frequently than another.
