Buenas noches or buena noche

Hi all,I've experienced that some people in Mexico and in a spanish film say "buena noche" without the "s" at the end.Is this correct? Was this the original way to say it in spanish? Why do they say it this way as opposed to the more accected "buenas noches"?Thanks

"buenas" or the cut-off version of "buena..." for Buen[b]O[/b]s dias.
