Where can I find a Home Depot or Home Mart in MC & Veracruz?

Hello from Washington, DC:

I stumbled on this site looking for information about Mexican hardware stores. I am headed to Veracruz this Friday as a volunteer to build houses with Jimmy Carter and Habitat for Humanity. We're planning to build 75 house in Veracruz in one week with over a thousand volunteers and 75 soon-to-be-homeowner families.

We have recently learned that there is likely to be a shortage of essential tools on the site and advised it would be easier and cheaper to purchase them in Mexico. The volunteers who have been in Veracruz already helping prepare for the build said they frequently had to send someone to Mexico City to pick up basic tools like drill bits. I find it hard to believe there aren't any large hardware stores closer than Mexico City. We will be buying large quantities--100 extension cords, 200 power drills, etc., so large home improvements store would be best. We wil be flying into Mexico City where I understand there are at least 10 Home Depot/Home Mart stores. We only have a few hours before our bus leaves so we're trying to find the exact location of these stores, preferably closest to the airport or the Tapo bus station. I found the Mexican Home Depot website, but it doesn't have a "store locator" function or a "contact us" link.

I would deeply appreciate if anyone could help me locate the large home improvement stores in Mexico City. If you know of any near Veracruz, that would be great too. In addition to me, thousands of volunteers and homeowner families would be eternally grateful.

Another army of Habitat volunteers will be building 75 house in Puebla at the same time we'll be building in Veracruz. If you're in the area of either site, you're welcome to come out and join us! http://www.habitatmexico.org/inicio.htm

Thanks,

Habitat Holly

Holly,

After reading your first post, I wondered why there would be a problem. But with the large quantities you listed in your second post, it might be "safer" to get your supplies in MC, to assure you get what you need. (I think you'd be hard pressed to get those quantities at one Home Depot in the US) I don't live in Mexico, so I can't help you on locations, but perhaps others on this site can.

Good luck and God bless. Tom.

Since you might indeed have a bit of a problem finding even a Home Depot that had 200 power drills (plus your other items) in stock if you just walk in off the street, another suggestion might be to try to utilize the connections that Habitat For Humanity's main office must have with the US branch of either Walmart or Home Depot to pre-order or whatever to arrange to have all your items avaliable at whatever outlet is nearest your site.

Also be sure you pre-advise whatever credit card company you plan to use to charge this that you'll be making a big charge from Mexico. You don't need any surprises on either the amount or the new charge location.

Do you not have any people on the ground in Veracruz ahead of your arrival thaT can scout out other sources, maybe not necessarily in a Home Depot. Extension cords, drill bits, power drills, and general construction tools are not that hard to come by, especially in a city as big as Veracruz (or Puebla) although it might take driving to a number of smaller hardware stores or Walmarts to buy piecemeal.

Good luck

Ed
