Thinset - White Cement - Admix = confusion. Help.

My current DIY (Do It Yourself) project is putting in new border tile in my swimming pool. Have about 28 meters. Removed the old tiles (20cm tall) w/o any problems. Next will be to remove the old white cement (or whatever it is) and get to a smooth concrete surface. Then patch some very narrow horizontal cracks from slight settleing and put on the tiles.

My question is what is the best mixture to use for setting the tiles on a verticle surface? I want this to last so don't want to scrimp.

Suggestions appreciated.

I have always used regular thinset for the walls of showers and bathrooms. No problems.

Thinset in Mexico is known as pegapiso. It works fine. Run a level line 1/2 tile width above the floor. Put in a temporary support, 1" X 2" wood if available under the line. Run your first course. When set, remove the wood and cut tiles to fit the floor which is usually not level.

An alternate method for swimming pools: Use clear silicone. Seems to work fine. The pool company used this for my pool in Florida a long time ago (1970s). No problems.

The tiles I am putting on are something like 1/2"X1/2" and in a pattern and maybe 200 pieces in a pattern on baper backing. I am told I need to put the white sement on the pool wall and then press the tile into the cement and then wait for it to dry completely. Then I wet the paper and it drops off the tiles and then I grout them. Each paper is 20cm high and maybe 12" wide.

Sounds as if the silcone would be good for individual tiles.

According to the guys who just re-tiled my bathroom, Perdura is the best brand of pegapiso to buy.

Is Home Depot my best bet or is there someplace Lakeside to get it?

I looked it up and it has the additives I want.

You should look at Ferretería Jara, next to Telmex in Ajijic. If Jara doesn't have it, Sra. Jara will tell you which of the local building suppliers carries it.

If by some fluke no one at Lakeside sells Perdura, head for Avenida Niños Héroes in Guadalajara. You'll find literally hundreds of stores selling bathroom and kitchen tiles and fixtures and the materials used to attach them. Many sell Perdura.

Don't bother with Home Depot. You'll pay more for the same product if you go there.

Thanks, I did find it locally and I know the "Miles of Tiles" area of which you speak. I think I have bought literally 50 boxes of tiles in the last year from one of the stores there.
