Speaking of IMSS

I would like to get an idea of IMSS costs for the workers. I have been told some conflicting information.

The IMSS office in Chapala was unhelpful. Others have told me that we need to go to Guad & work it out on a per sq. meter basis & then settle up with IMSS when construction is complete or the account will remain open.

A local abogado sent us to a lady, Alma, who works for Coldwell-Banker. He said that she was an expert in dealing with IMSS. She offered to manage the whole IMSS thing for $100 pesos per worker per month. This is beginning to sound like a bargain. I am told that you figure the IMSS portion based on the minimum wage, not the actual salary.

Of course I still need to know how much it will cost at IMSS.

I would like to hear some forum feedback on this.

Thanks,

Patricio

There are some complicated formulas that are based on the workers wages. You pay not only IMSS but for other benefits like Infonavit and something else....can't remember. You need to keep track of who is working for you, how much you pay and when they are let go. If you don't follow procedures, workers could come back in a year or so and claim their benefits plus you'll be fined. In Mazatlan, the whole thing is set up by the benefits office and they give you a floppy disc with all the info. You bring in the disc each time you have a change or when you are required to pay the benefits. No one here is going to have the info you need. You need to talk with a Mexican expert in this field.

The IMSS payments are calculated on the basis of what you pay the workers, not the legal minimum wage. Sometimes IMSS inspectors visit jobs and interview workers to verify that the reported wages are true.

You will get a bill from IMSS every month for health insurance and other IMSS functions. Every other month you will get a second bill for the housing fund. You must pay these bills at a designated bank. There is a late fee.

At the end of a new construction job, an IMSS inspector will visit the job to measure the building and calculate the minimum amount of payments that the IMSS thinks they should have gotten from the job – they have formulas for different kinds of buildings. If you have paid that much or more, they'll close out the job. If you haven't paid enough, they'll send you a bill. I did not know about that rule when I did my new construction project. Because we had a lot of donated labor by me and family, our closeout bill was very high -- a hell of jolt!

You will need help in dealing with the IMSS – it is not a do it yourself task. $100 pesos per worker per month sounds high. Shop around. Talk to accountants who do this for a living. I don’t remember what we paid our guy, but it sure wasn’t as much as your lady is asking.

Good Luck,
