On My Dill Kick Again

Can't Post | Private Reply
I guess I am on my Dill kick again. Recently I discovered, while NOB, the outrageous price of Dill sold in the spice section of some of the big box stores. It has for some reason skyrocketed. So now I have decided that we will plant some Dill in our growing herb garden wish list.

I ran across this interesting information on growing Dill successfully in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dill.

Cultivation
Successful cultivation requires warm to hot summers with high sunshine levels; even partial shade will reduce the yield substantially. It also prefers rich, well drained soil. The seeds are viable for 3–10 years.

The seed is harvested by cutting the flower heads off the stalks when the seed is beginning to ripen. The seed heads are placed upside down in a paper bag and left in a warm dry place for a week. The seeds then separate from the stems easily for storage in an airtight container.

Companion Planting

Dill plants

When used as a companion planting, dill draws in many beneficial insects as the umbrella flower heads go to seed. Fittingly, it makes a good companion plant for cucumbers. It is a poor companion for carrots and tomatoes.

I would think that Mexico, due to the great amount of sunshine, is a good place for growing Dill.

Robert,
Have you planted dill? It is the first herb I want to plant in my rooftop garden here in DF. If you planted some, how did it grow/how is it growing? :)

PS I have been googling rhe subject

http://www.ehow.com/how_6547187_grow-herbs-mexico.html (I dont generally like ehow.com, but it references MX spwcifically, so maybe helpful?)

Hi Tricia,

I hope your move has going well, without any problems and that you are setteling in OK.

Thanks to a friend here in Mexico, he has sent us some dill seeds to plant in our new garden. as soon as we get all the boxes settled in the new house we are going to plant that garden. Our amigo and his wife live in an area similar in climate to ours and he said the dill grows abundantly there. Hopefully we will have the same luck.

Most all places I have checked though, (such as this one below) say not to grow dill near carrots or cabbage although they do suggest planting near onions, only they do not say why! (smiling) Gardening Tips for Growing Dill – “Don't plant dill near carrots or cabbages, they don't grow well together (see companion planting guide). Dill planted near onions can be beneficial though”.

Well, nice to hear from you again. Say hello to your other half!

I wish it was a hop, skip and jump to you folks in Mexico. I could bring all of you seeds. I planted dill a few years ago and each year I have more and more from re-seeding. I give it away, transplant it with my cucumbers, and generally let it do it's own thing and attract beneficial insects to my garden.

I never cared for dill pickles until I made my own with fresh dill. I also like potato salad more with fresh dill.

What do you all do with it? I'm always open to new ideas.

The Swedes use dill in more of their dishes than any other culture on the planet. Swedish meatballs in dill sauce, dill bread, cucumber salads with dill, creamed potatoes with dill, salt herring with dill, dill, dill and more dill. Google "Swedish recipes and dill" .

It makes many different light dill sauces for fish dishes, (such as a little natural yogurt, with a few chips (and I mean a few) of crushed garlic with a dry white wine sauce over poached salmon steaks I really enjoy it in real mashed potatoes along with a bit of Sour Crème, milk and butter, baked potatoes with a little butter. Try adding a little to a bowl of Cream of Mushroom soup, It's also great in an omelet in the morning and on and on.

Hey there fellow gardener!

Is there any way I could convince you to bring me some dill seeds as well when you return north? I can pay for the seeds and shipping within mexico :)

I am about tonplant Eneldo seeds which I bought at Home Depot here in MX City, but its not exactly the same flavor.
