How do I stucco over painted brick?

A large part of the outside of our place is painted-over brick. Our maestro says all the paint has to be removed if we want to stucco over it.
Has anyone had any experience doing this? Removing all that paint would be a huge job.
Thanks

The only relatively easy way would be with a sand blaster.... Maybe they're available for rent from one of the bigbox stores??

We're not for from H.Depot. Thanks. Our guy wants to put an ayudante with a grinder on it. My guess is a week to do it that way.

I’m not a builder but I have noticed in the past that before stucco is applied they use something like a tarpaper backing against a structure, then they tack or brace like chicken wire over it which is attached to edge boarding. Then they apply and adhere the plaster/stucco to the surface of the chicken wire that holds it in place.

That method is used on wood frame construction...
