Help finding a dehumidifier here in MX?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I found a listing for one on mercadolibre, but it A) doesnt come with a warantee B) is quite small and C) costs more than it should for size and brand.

I checked the Elektra website, no luck. What companies here in Mexico sell these? Or am I better off ordering stateside and having it shipped (nearly 40-50 lb machine, yikes!)?

We dont go back stateside till the rainy season ends, so buying it in person and driving it back isnt an option for us. :(

Thoughts? Thank you!

Home Depot in the Metropolitan area shows one model, 12 liter capacity, for 3399 pesos. 1 year guarantee.

Palacio de Hierro shows one with 10 liters capacity for 3590 pesos. Another for closets with 1.5 liter capacity for 1299 pesos.

Sears shows one for closets that has 1.5 liter capacity, for 1039 pesos,

In the US Home Depot, a 14 liter (30 pints) dehumidifier sells for about 200 bucks....

Do you have mini split air conditioners? They often feature a low energy 'dehumdifier' function. The room(s) will have to be as airtight as possible using weather stripping.

Using a normal air conditioner only to remove humidity is a very expensive & inefficient way to lower humidity. Typical dehumidifiers are already energy pigs to begin with (500 - 800 watts is common), and using a normal air conditioner (1500 watts - 3000 watts) is an even less efficient way to lower humidity. If instead you also want some cooling, then running an A/C for cooling and dehumidifying can kill 2 birds with the proberbial stone.

Why is running an A/C a poor choice for just dehumidifying? Normal air conditioners run the compressor at just 1 speed: Full Speed = expensive & inefficient. Instead, if you have one of the new Inverter style air conditioners that uses variable DC power to drive the compressor, then the energy usage by the Inverter´s much lower compressor speeds can come close to the still-substantial power consumption of a dehumidifier. Also, since Air Conditioners are designed to cool air, and dehumidifiers are designed to remove humidity, for the same watts of energy used, purpose-built dehumidifiers are more efficient at removing humidity than air conditioners,

Using a normal 1500 watt minisplit air conditioner 24/7 for dehumidifying can easily result in 360 KW-hr per month usage, which puts most Mexican electricity users in the 6X higher DAC rates, so using an air conditioner to dehumidify not only uses a lot of power, but it can raise your monthly electricity rates on all other power by 6X...

It is another poster on this forum who posted the dehumidifier tip - she had worked it out, and she is a smart cookie. She also posted that the problem with standalone dehumidifiers is that yes, they pull out the water, but they also generate a lot of heat (and noise). The mini split is always external, whatever heat is generated stays outside. If there is a dehumidifier which can run and discharge water outside, with just an inlet/oulet inside, that would be perfect. Never have seen one.

DC inverter technology is the way to go. DC power runs a motor at constant horsepower, no matter how slow you make it go. AC motors lose horsepower at slow speeds and can actually burn out. The additional cost of DC is only the cost of the AC to DC transformer (included with the unit).

It is still quite comfortable here in Puerto Vallarta, we do use the AC 'sleep' function at night, which gives about four hours of cooling.

Just wanted to update that we purchased a dehumidifier from
Home Depot and have been very happy with it. It is "green" in that it uses less poqer than most models (supposedly) and does not get hot after running for 12 hours plus!

We don't have AC, nor do my inlaws have windows that open in the bedrooms, so that tactic wouldnt work for us. Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions!

Will double check the model and post when I have the chance, if anyone is also looking for one.
