Construction in San Miguel

Hello all,

Wondered if anyone could give me any real world insight into building in San Miguel de Allende. On this site and others I've seen estimates of $40-$60 a square foot for building in Mexico generally. I recently talked to a contracter in SMA who said that costs could go as high as $80.00 a square foot, depending. Obviously there's a world of difference between $40 and $80. Is $40 a realistic figure? Is $80 just an estimate from a contractor hoping to provide wiggle room for future bills? Will SMA be more expensive per square foot (as it seems to be a bit more expensive than the rest of Mexico generally?)

As an aside, Rolly, thank you for your website about your building projects. Very, very interesting and helpful.

Any input from any source much appreciated.
